Can Misses Records 343 Abortions in Seven Months, Second-Highest Total Among Balearic Public Hospitals

October 22, 2026

Ibiza’s Can Misses Hospital recorded 343 voluntary terminations of pregnancy between January and July 2026, according to figures from the Balearic Government’s Health Department provided in response to a parliamentary question.

The total places Can Misses second among the Balearic Islands’ public hospitals, behind Son Espases in Mallorca, which recorded 677 procedures. Son Llàtzer registered 329 during the same period.

Across the public hospital system in the Balearic Islands, 1,939 terminations were recorded in the first seven months of 2026. Of these, 1,920 were medical procedures and 19 were surgical, according to the figures reported.

Can Misses accounts for around 17.7% of the total

The 343 procedures recorded at Can Misses represent approximately 17.7% of the 1,939 terminations reported across the region’s public hospitals between January and July.

The hospital-by-hospital breakdown is as follows:

  • Son Espases: 677 procedures.

  • Can Misses: 343.

  • Son Llàtzer: 329.

  • Manacor Hospital: 263.

  • Mateu Orfila Hospital, Menorca: 218.

  • Inca Hospital: 109.

The figures show that Can Misses recorded 125 more procedures than Mateu Orfila Hospital over the same seven-month period.

These are counts of procedures carried out at individual hospitals. They do not establish the rate of abortion among residents of Ibiza, Formentera or any other island, since patients may receive care outside the area where they live.

What the figures do and do not show

The data provide a snapshot of activity in the public hospital system during the first seven months of 2026. They do not, on their own, show whether the number of terminations has increased or decreased compared with the same period in 2025.

The figures also do not establish why women chose to terminate a pregnancy or whether the numbers are linked to particular government policies. Understanding those questions would require additional information, including comparable time-series data and evidence on the circumstances and reasons associated with the procedures.

The Balearic Government maintains an official registry of voluntary terminations of pregnancy, drawing on information from public hospitals and accredited private centres. The totals reported in this case, however, relate specifically to public hospitals and should not be confused with the full regional total across all providers.

Parliamentary criticism over maternity support

The figures were requested by Agustín Buades, a non-attached member of the Balearic Parliament.

Buades argued that the numbers pointed to what he considers insufficient protection and support for motherhood in the Balearic Islands. That is his political interpretation of the data; the figures themselves do not establish the causes of the procedures or demonstrate a direct relationship with maternity-support policies.

The parliamentarian also commented on President Marga Prohens’s announcement of a planned accommodation centre for pregnant women and mothers with young children who need temporary housing because of financial difficulties or a lack of family and social support.

Buades welcomed the initiative but argued that it had come late in the legislature. He said he would monitor the creation of the centre and the government’s announced comprehensive plan for family and maternity support.

The information available does not provide a confirmed opening date for the accommodation centre or a detailed timetable for the broader plan.

More data needed to assess trends

The January-to-July figures provide a breakdown of procedures across public hospitals, but further data would be needed to assess longer-term trends in Ibiza or across the Balearic Islands.

A comparison with the same months in previous years would help establish whether the number of procedures has risen or fallen. Data covering private providers would also be necessary to understand the full regional picture.

For now, the published figures establish that Can Misses recorded 343 voluntary terminations of pregnancy during the first seven months of 2026, making it the second-highest public hospital in the Balearic Islands by the reported number of procedures. They do not, by themselves, explain the reasons behind those figures or demonstrate the effectiveness of particular public policies.
