Sant Josep Local Police have revealed how a drone equipped with thermal camera technology was used to locate a meeting point for a suspected unauthorised villa party in Ibiza, allowing officers to intervene before the event could develop into a large gathering.

The operation was made public on September 8, 2026, when Sant Josep Local Police released video footage showing how officers combined information gathering, aerial surveillance and ground patrols to disrupt the planned event.

The case provides a rare look at how authorities in one of Ibiza's municipalities are approaching private villa events that they consider to be operating outside the required legal framework.

It Started With a WhatsApp Invitation

According to the police operation described in the footage, officers first became aware of the planned event through a message circulating in a WhatsApp broadcast group.

The invitation advertised a birthday party at a private villa, described as invitation-only, with music, a swimming pool and several DJs. The message also contained a Google Maps location believed to identify the meeting point for guests before they travelled to the property.

Local reporting identified the group as "After Villa Ibiza", which was being used to circulate invitations for this type of event.

The planned party was due to begin at around 06:00, according to the information shown in the invitation.

The Drone Was Used to Find the Meeting Point

Once officers had the information, Sant Josep Local Police deployed a drone fitted with a thermal camera to search for the meeting point.

The footage shows the drone moving over different parts of the municipality before identifying activity in the car park beside CEIP L'Urgell.

The school car park has previously been identified by local authorities and reporting as a meeting point associated with access to villa parties in the area.

The drone's thermal or infrared capability allowed officers to identify a vehicle in the area during the operation.

This is an important distinction: the publicly released footage does not show police discovering a huge crowd gathered inside the villa from the air. The drone was used to locate the pre-party meeting point, which police could then monitor from the ground.

A Driver Appeared to Notice the Drone

According to the police account, the driver of a vehicle at the meeting point appeared to notice the drone.

The vehicle left the area, apparently attempting to avoid the approaching patrol, but later returned to the same car park.

A Sant Josep Local Police patrol then arrived and identified the man whom officers suspected of being connected to the organisation of the event.

The sequence illustrates the strategy behind the operation: identify where guests are being assembled, locate the people coordinating the arrival process and intervene before the planned party can develop.

A Roadside Drug Test Was Also Positive

The police operation also included a roadside drug test involving a driver connected to the meeting point.

Local reports state that the test was positive for drugs. Neither the police footage nor the reports reviewed for this article specify which substance was detected.

A positive roadside screening should not be treated as proof of a criminal offence or a final finding of guilt. No further information establishing a conviction or specifying the substance has been published in the material reviewed for this report.

Police Then Went to the Villa

After dealing with the meeting point, officers proceeded to the location of the planned party.

Police said the operation ultimately stopped the event from taking place as planned. The significance of the intervention is therefore not the removal of hundreds of guests, but the fact that officers acted before a large crowd had formed.

That proactive element distinguishes this operation from the much larger villa-party interventions seen elsewhere on Ibiza during the 2026 season.

Why Sant Josep Says It Is Acting

In the statement accompanying the video, Sant Josep Local Police said unauthorised parties in homes and other spaces can create risks that go beyond noise.

The force cited potential risks to the physical safety of attendees and third parties, traffic and parking problems, the absence of required safety measures and serious disruption to neighbours' rest and coexistence.

Police also said they would continue identifying and pursuing responsibility among organisers and attendees.

The municipality's position is that describing an event as "invitation only" does not automatically transform a private property into an authorised venue for a public event.

Ibiza's Villa Party Crackdown

The drone operation comes against a wider backdrop of enforcement against large villa events in Ibiza.

In July, Sant Josep Local Police dismantled a suspected unauthorised party at Casa Paola in Es Cubells, where more than 250 people were evacuated. The municipality said the property did not have the required authorisation for the activity.

In a separate case in Sant Antoni in June, authorities intervened at a villa event attended by around 1,000 people. That operation involved multiple meeting points and shuttle transport to the property, illustrating why authorities have focused increasingly on the way guests are assembled and moved before reaching villas.

The cases are in different municipalities and involved different operations, but together they show why meeting points have become an important part of enforcement.

Potential Fines Can Be Substantial

Balearic legislation provides significant penalties for the organisation, commercialisation, advertising or holding of illegal parties in homes or protected natural areas.

Under the amendments to Law 7/2013, such conduct can constitute a very serious infringement, with fines ranging from €100,000 to €300,000. The legislation also allows additional measures in certain circumstances.

That does not mean every person attending a villa event automatically faces a €100,000 or €300,000 fine. The maximum figures relate to the relevant serious infringement category and the applicable responsibilities under the law.

A New Tool in the Enforcement Strategy

The use of aerial surveillance is particularly notable because it allows officers to search areas that may be difficult to monitor from the road, while the thermal camera can assist with detection in low-light conditions.

Sant Josep Local Police already has an established drone capability. The municipality previously described its drone equipment as including a thermal camera and night-flight capabilities, alongside other features.

The September operation shows that the technology is now being incorporated into the practical detection of suspected unauthorised villa events.

It also highlights an increasingly coordinated approach: information from private messaging channels, aerial surveillance, vehicle monitoring and officers on the ground were all used in the same operation.

Not Every Villa Gathering Is the Same

It is important not to blur the distinction between a normal private gathering and the type of activity targeted in these operations.

The authorities' concern in this case was an organised event advertised with DJs and a meeting point for transporting guests to a private villa. Police said such events can fall outside the conditions of an ordinary private gathering when they operate as unauthorised public entertainment activities.

The operation therefore centres on the characteristics of the planned event and its organisation, rather than simply the fact that people intended to meet at a private home.

The Significance of the Drone Footage

For Ibiza, the footage offers a revealing glimpse into a part of the island's nightlife that normally remains hidden from public view.

There was no large crowd to photograph, no packed dancefloor and no dramatic mass evacuation in the operation shown by police.

Instead, the sequence begins with a digital invitation and ends with a vehicle identified in a dark car park by aerial surveillance.

The message from Sant Josep is clear: authorities are attempting to intervene earlier, before a private villa gathering turns into a large, unauthorised event.

And for organisers relying on secrecy, invitation-only messaging and remote meeting points, the operation demonstrates that those measures do not necessarily make an event invisible to the authorities.
