From Amnesia to Alpacas: Canadian Writer Returns to Ibiza With His Baby and Discovers the Island Beyond the Party Scene

Ibiza is famous around the world for its clubs, DJs and nights that stretch towards sunrise. But a recent visit by Canadian travel writer Mark Burgess has highlighted a very different way to experience the island: with a seven-month-old baby, a stroller and a much earlier bedtime.
Burgess returned to Ibiza almost 20 years after his first visit, when his trip centred around Amnesia and the island's legendary nightlife. This time, he arrived with his partner and their baby, staying in the northeast and discovering beaches, countryside, family activities and quieter corners of the island.
His experience offers an entertaining look at what happens when Ibiza's party reputation meets the realities of travelling with a young child.
A Very Different Return to Ibiza
Burgess's first Ibiza experience was almost the ultimate party-island story.
He originally came to the island for an opening night at Amnesia, arriving as part of a short trip built around nightlife. Nearly two decades later, his return was very different.
The clubs were not yet open for the new season when he arrived in early April, and his base was Cala Llenya Resort in the northeast, away from the main nightlife centres of Ibiza Town and Sant Antoni.
Instead of late nights followed by sleeping on the beach, the family's days were organised around breakfast, naps, beaches, short excursions and getting back to the hotel in time for bedtime.
The comparison is almost impossible to miss. On his first trip, the early morning was associated with leaving a nightclub. On this one, 6:30 a.m. meant waking up his baby.
Discovering Ibiza With a Baby
One of the most interesting observations in Burgess's story is simply how many family-friendly experiences fit naturally into an Ibiza itinerary.
At Finca Can Musón, near Santa Eulària, his family spent time around farm animals, with children able to feed goats and donkeys. The experience gave them a glimpse of the island's rural side, far removed from the superclubs and beach clubs usually associated with Ibiza.
They also visited Es Currals Alpacas Ibiza, a rural alpaca farm where visits are arranged by appointment. The farm is part of a very different kind of Ibiza experience, centred around animals, nature and traditional craftsmanship.
Then there was Aquarium Cap Blanc in Sant Antoni, one of the island's more unusual attractions. Located inside a natural sea cave, the aquarium occupies what was historically a lobster nursery and today offers visitors an opportunity to see Mediterranean marine life while learning more about the local coastal environment.
For a family travelling with a baby, these are the kinds of experiences that work particularly well because they do not depend on staying out late or following a rigid schedule.
Even Dalt Vila Becomes a Different Experience
The family also explored Ibiza Town and visited Dalt Vila.
For Burgess, however, seeing the historic old town with a stroller came with a practical lesson. The famous cobbled streets are beautiful but are hardly designed with modern pushchairs in mind.
That small detail captures the reality of family travel particularly well. Ibiza can absolutely be explored with a baby, but the experience is different and often requires more planning, flexibility and patience.
Instead of moving from one major attraction to another, the family's days were built around whatever window of time their son allowed.
A swim might have to happen during a nap. A sunset visit might finish early. Dinner might happen much sooner than it would have on a traditional Ibiza holiday.
And sometimes the simplest option was simply to eat on the terrace while the baby slept.
The Party Island Was Still There
Interestingly, the family did not completely escape Ibiza's famous atmosphere.
Their resort provided evening entertainment, including live music, chillout-style sounds, children's entertainment and even a German karaoke night.
They also visited a sunset venue in Sant Antoni, although the family left well before sunset so they could return in time for bedtime.
It is a funny but very recognisable contrast. Ibiza nightlife may continue deep into the night, but travelling with a baby can turn the idea of staying out until midnight into a completely different proposition.
The trip was not about recreating the Ibiza of Burgess's twenties. It was about discovering what could replace it.
Ibiza Has Been Promoting Family Tourism
Burgess's experience also fits with the direction Ibiza's official tourism strategy has been taking.
Ibiza Travel now actively promotes family holidays, with the Ibiza Family Moments concept designed around family-friendly accommodation, experiences and services. The official tourism destination also highlights beaches with calm and shallow waters, outdoor activities, cultural attractions, nature and gastronomy as part of the island's family offer.
Among the beaches highlighted by Ibiza Travel for families are Cala Llonga, Cala Nova, Cala Bassa, Portinatx and Talamanca. The tourism board also points families towards experiences ranging from Dalt Vila and archaeological sites to nature trails, boat trips and cycling routes.
The timing of Burgess's trip is also significant. Ibiza Travel specifically identifies spring and autumn as particularly suitable periods for family travel, when temperatures are milder and visitor numbers are generally lower than during the peak summer months.
That does not mean travelling with a baby is effortless. Ibiza's famously late dining culture, uneven historic streets and summer heat can all require additional planning. But the island's relatively compact size and the variety of outdoor and cultural experiences mean a family trip can be built around a slower rhythm.
A Different Kind of Ibiza Holiday
Perhaps the most memorable element of Burgess's story is that Ibiza itself is not necessarily what changed.
He changed.
The island that once meant Amnesia at sunrise now meant watching his son experience the sea for the first time. The big nights were replaced by short swims, farm visits, simple meals and moments squeezed between naps.
And that may be the most interesting lesson in the story.
Ibiza does not have to mean the same thing to every visitor.
For one person, it can be a legendary club night. For another, it can be a morning at the beach, a walk through Dalt Vila, a visit to a farm, an afternoon discovering the coastline or dinner on a terrace while a baby sleeps nearby.
The island is big enough, varied enough and relaxed enough in many places to accommodate all of those versions of Ibiza.
Ibiza Beyond the Stereotype
There is also an important point behind the story that goes beyond one family's holiday.
Ibiza's international reputation has been built largely around nightlife, but its official tourism strategy increasingly presents the island through a much broader mix of nature, heritage, beaches, gastronomy, wellbeing and family experiences.
Burgess's journey is therefore less about proving that Ibiza can somehow be turned into a conventional family resort and more about showing that the island already contains another side that can be easy to overlook.
The clubs will always be part of Ibiza.
But they are not the whole story.
Sometimes, the most memorable Ibiza trip might begin not when the DJ comes on at midnight, but when a baby's toes touch the Mediterranean for the first time.
