Day 15: Birdwatching at Ses Feixes

Day 15: Birdwatching at Ses Feixes

Ses Feixes is one of Ibiza’s most interesting wetland landscapes, located between Ibiza Town and Talamanca. The area was historically used for agriculture, with a network of channels and small cultivated plots known as feixes. Today, its reeds, waterways, and wetland vegetation provide an important habitat for birdlife close to the city.

The quieter winter months are particularly rewarding for birdwatching, as Ses Feixes provides shelter and feeding grounds for resident and wintering species. Among the birds that can be seen are Mallards, Coots, Little Grebes, Water Rails, and Black-winged Stilts. Little Egrets and Cattle Egrets can also be found around the wetland and surrounding agricultural areas, while Cetti’s Warblers remain hidden within the dense vegetation.

The setting makes the experience particularly distinctive. Whitewashed portals de feixa, narrow channels, reeds, old agricultural plots, and surrounding fields remain part of the landscape, creating a fascinating connection between Ibiza’s natural and cultural heritage. Despite being so close to Ibiza Town, the wetlands can feel surprisingly removed from the built-up areas around them.

Among the birds to look out for at Ses Feixes are:

Mallard
A familiar duck frequently associated with the calm waters and channels of the wetland.

Coot
A dark waterbird commonly found around the waterways and reed-filled areas.

Little Grebe
A small diving bird that searches beneath the surface for aquatic food.

Water Rail
A secretive wetland species that often stays hidden among reeds and dense vegetation.

Black-winged Stilt
A striking wader recognised by its exceptionally long legs and black-and-white plumage.

Little Egret
A small white heron often seen feeding around shallow water and wetland edges.

Cattle Egret
A white egret frequently associated with fields, livestock, and agricultural areas around the wetlands.

Cetti’s Warbler
A resident bird of dense wetland vegetation, often easier to hear than to see.

European Goldfinch
A colourful finch commonly found around scrub, fields, and areas of vegetation.

Linnet
A small finch associated with open countryside, shrubs, and agricultural landscapes.

Birdwatching at Ses Feixes offers a quieter way to experience Ibiza, combining wildlife with a landscape shaped by centuries of agriculture and water management. It is a reminder that even close to the island’s main town, pockets of wetland and traditional countryside continue to support a surprising variety of life.
