A large Airbus A340-600 operated for the Government of Azerbaijan has attracted attention at Ibiza Airport after being spotted on the island this month.

The aircraft, registered 4K-AI08, is a VIP-configured Airbus A340-642ACJ operated by Azerbaijan Airlines on behalf of the Azerbaijani government.

Its presence at Ibiza Airport has raised questions about who was travelling aboard and the purpose of the visit, but neither has been officially disclosed.

One of the Largest Airbus A340 Variants

The aircraft is an Airbus A340-600, the longest member of the A340 family produced by Airbus.

The A340-600 measures approximately 75.3 metres in length and has a wingspan of around 63.45 metres. The aircraft was built in 2006 and is listed as a VIP aircraft rather than a conventional passenger airliner.

Its registration, 4K-AI08, is associated with the Government of the Republic of Azerbaijan, with Azerbaijan Airlines listed as its operator.

The aircraft's distinctive Azerbaijani government livery makes it particularly noticeable at Ibiza Airport, where most private aviation traffic consists of considerably smaller business jets.

Aircraft Spotted in Ibiza This Month

A local aviation enthusiast site recorded the aircraft in Ibiza on September 9, reporting a Baku-Málaga-Ibiza-Baku routing.

The same report identified the aircraft as 4K-AI08 and noted that it had been converted for VIP use.

Diario de Ibiza subsequently reported the aircraft at the airport on September 15, where several black vans were seen around it. The newspaper said Aena had no information available about the passengers or the reason for the trip.

Because publicly available flight information does not establish the identity of the passengers, the aircraft's exact itinerary and purpose should be treated cautiously.

Previously Used by Azerbaijan's President

The aircraft has previously been used for official trips involving Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev.

However, there is no evidence establishing that Aliyev was aboard during the Ibiza visit.

On September 15, the Azerbaijani presidential website recorded Aliyev receiving Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan in Baku. That official engagement provides evidence of the president's presence in Azerbaijan on that date, although it does not by itself establish the whereabouts of every passenger who may have been associated with the aircraft.

Who Was on Board?

At present, the identity of the passengers remains unconfirmed.

Some local reporting has linked the aircraft's Ibiza visit to Mehriban Aliyeva, Azerbaijan's First Vice-President and First Lady, and one of her daughters. However, that claim has not been confirmed by Aena or the Azerbaijani government.

The distinction is important because the aircraft itself can be independently identified, while the identity of its passengers cannot currently be established from official information.

A Rare Aircraft at Ibiza Airport

The A340-600 is an increasingly uncommon sight in European aviation.

The type was designed as a long-haul four-engine passenger aircraft, but 4K-AI08 has a VIP configuration and is operated for government use. Aircraft databases list the government aircraft as active.

Its size alone makes it stand out at Ibiza Airport, particularly alongside the smaller private jets that regularly use the airport.

The Reason for the Visit Remains Unknown

For now, there is no confirmed explanation for why the Azerbaijani government aircraft was in Ibiza.

The presence of the aircraft is documented, as is its government registration, but the available evidence does not establish whether the visit was connected to private travel, official business, a security detail or another purpose.

No official announcement has been identified explaining the trip.

The aircraft's appearance therefore remains an unusual aviation sighting at Ibiza Airport, while questions about its passengers and purpose remain unanswered.
