Whatnot: The Live Shopping Platform Taking Over the Internet

Online shopping has become incredibly convenient, but it has also become incredibly predictable.

You search for something, scroll through product photos, compare prices and click "buy." The entire experience can be over in a few minutes.

Whatnot decided to make shopping feel completely different.

Instead of simply browsing products, Whatnot turns shopping into a live experience. Sellers broadcast live shows where they demonstrate products, answer questions, run auctions, offer flash sales and interact directly with viewers. The result feels less like visiting an online store and more like walking into a market where something interesting is always happening.

That idea has grown remarkably quickly.

Whatnot describes itself as a live shopping marketplace covering more than 250 categories, from fashion and beauty to sneakers, collectibles, trading cards, electronics, jewelry, comics and much more.

The appeal is partly the unpredictability.

On a traditional shopping website, you usually know what you're looking for before you arrive. On Whatnot, discovery is part of the experience. You might join a live show because you're interested in sneakers and suddenly find yourself watching an auction for vintage clothing, collectible cards or a rare item you didn't even know existed.

That sense of discovery is one of the reasons Whatnot feels closer to social media than a traditional marketplace.

You aren't just looking at products.

You're watching people.

Sellers talk to their audiences in real time, answer questions and build communities around their particular interests. Buyers can participate in auctions, purchase items immediately through Buy It Now, take part in flash sales or simply watch a show and see what appears next.

It is shopping, but it is also entertainment.

And the numbers suggest that people are responding.

Whatnot says sellers generated $8 billion in sales during 2025, while its platform now attracts more than half a million people every week across its hundreds of categories. The company also says buyers spend an average of 95 minutes per day on the platform and that 80% of customers purchase something each month.

The company has expanded far beyond the collectibles niche where it first became known.

Whatnot originally became closely associated with categories such as trading cards, sneakers and comics, but the marketplace has continued adding new areas including art, golf, vinyl, fashion, beauty and many other categories. TechCrunch reported in July 2026 that Whatnot had surpassed one billion orders and had added more than 45 categories during the first half of 2026 alone.

That expansion has transformed Whatnot into something much bigger than a collectibles marketplace.

It is becoming an alternative way to shop online.

The platform's growth has also attracted enormous investor attention.

In August 2026, Fortune reported that Whatnot had raised $545 million in a Series G funding round at a valuation of $20 billion, nearly doubling its $11.5 billion valuation from October 2025.

The Wall Street Journal similarly reported the $20 billion valuation and noted that Whatnot's gross merchandise volume had surpassed $8 billion during the first half of 2026.

Those numbers are particularly remarkable considering that Whatnot only launched in 2019.

The company's rapid rise reflects a broader change in how people discover products. Social media has already made product discovery more personal, with creators demonstrating products, sharing recommendations and building communities around specific interests.

Whatnot takes that concept one step further by putting the shopping experience directly inside the live interaction.

Instead of watching a creator recommend a product and then leaving the platform to find it somewhere else, the purchase can happen during the live show itself.

That makes Whatnot particularly interesting for creators.

The company currently operates a dedicated affiliate program for eligible creators. As of August 2026, creators with at least 1,000 followers or subscribers on a single social platform can apply, and approved affiliates receive personalized links that can be used to promote Whatnot products, shows and searches. Eligible purchases made within three days of a link click can generate commission.

For content creators, that creates several possibilities.

A fashion creator could share a Whatnot fashion show. A sneaker account could introduce followers to sneaker auctions. A collectibles creator could send an audience directly to a specific category. A lifestyle blogger could recommend interesting finds discovered on the platform.

The affiliate model therefore fits naturally into the way Whatnot is designed to work.

It isn't asking creators to interrupt their content with a random advertisement.

It gives them another place to send their audience to discover products.

Customer sentiment also shows that the platform has developed a substantial community.

Whatnot currently has more than 11,000 Trustpilot reviews and an overall score of 4.2 out of 5. Recent positive reviewers frequently mention the entertainment value of live shows, the variety of products, bargains and the simplicity of buying through the app.

That community element may ultimately be one of Whatnot's biggest advantages.

Traditional marketplaces are largely transactional. You search, buy and leave.

Whatnot wants you to stay.

You can follow sellers, return to their shows, chat with other viewers and become familiar with particular communities. The best sellers aren't simply listing products; they're building audiences that want to come back.

For sellers, this creates an entirely different opportunity.

Whatnot says its sellers made $8 billion in 2025 and that the average seller sells significantly more through the platform than on comparable marketplaces. The company also says some of its top sellers have built businesses generating millions of dollars in sales.

The platform provides the infrastructure as well, including live auctions, fixed-price listings, flash sales, integrated payments, shipping tools, analytics and Shopify integration.

That means Whatnot is becoming both a marketplace for buyers and a business platform for sellers.

And that may be the most important part of its story.

Whatnot isn't simply trying to make online shopping more convenient.

It is trying to make it more social.

The experience is built around people, personalities, communities and the excitement of not knowing exactly what will happen next.

That is why Whatnot has managed to turn something as ordinary as buying a product into an event.

You don't just browse.

You watch.

You interact.

You discover.

And sometimes, you end up buying something you never planned to look for in the first place.

With its rapid growth, enormous expansion into new categories, growing creator ecosystem and dedicated affiliate program, Whatnot is becoming one of the most interesting platforms for both shoppers and creators to discover.

For anyone who enjoys finding unusual products, watching live content or building an audience around a particular passion, Whatnot is a platform worth knowing about.
