A forest fire that broke out near homes in the Santa Eulària des Riu municipality on Monday, September 7, caused alarm in the surrounding area after a large column of smoke became visible from several parts of Ibiza.

The fire started in a wooded area along the Camí des Torrent de s’Argentera, not far from Cala Pada. Its proximity to residential properties initially led authorities to classify the incident as a Potential Severity 1 emergency, requiring a significant firefighting response.

The flames were brought under control relatively quickly and were fully extinguished at around 15:30, after burning approximately 800 square metres of forest land.

Although local residents reportedly suspect the fire may have been deliberately started, authorities have not confirmed that it was arson. The cause remains subject to investigation.

Fire Breaks Out Near Cala Pada

The fire was reported shortly after 13:00 in the Torrent de s’Argentera area of Santa Eulària.

The location is close to residential properties, which immediately increased concern about the possibility of the flames spreading towards homes.

A large column of smoke could be seen from different areas of the island as emergency services moved rapidly to the scene.

The proximity of the fire to buildings was one of the reasons authorities initially classified it as a Potential Severity 1 incident.

According to the Balearic Government's Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Natural Environment, the response included two aerial firefighting units, two water tankers, 22 forest firefighters including two technicians, and three environmental agents.

The Ibiza Fire Service also sent three fire engines to the area.

Local Police and the Guardia Civil assisted with the operation, including controlling access around the affected area.

The combination of aerial and ground resources allowed firefighters to attack the fire quickly and limit its spread.

Fire Extinguished Within Hours

The situation improved rapidly after the firefighting operation began.

IBANAT initially classified the incident as Potential Severity 1 because of the presence of homes close to the fire. The classification was later reduced as the risk diminished.

The fire was subsequently declared extinguished at around 15:30.

According to IB3, approximately 800 square metres of forest were affected.

No injuries or damage to nearby homes had been reported in the information available following the incident.

Residents Suspect the Fire May Have Been Deliberate

Local residents reportedly told Noudiari that they believed the fire may have been intentionally started. Witnesses described having seen a man in the area shortly before the flames appeared and authorities were reportedly looking into the possibility that the person could be connected to the incident.

However, this remains an allegation from witnesses and residents.

Official sources have not confirmed that the fire was deliberately caused. IB3 reported that authorities were referring the matter to the investigation being carried out after the fire was extinguished.

Those incidents were reported near the Camí de sa Font des Murtar on September 1. Residents initially helped contain one of the fires before a second outbreak occurred nearby.

Both were extinguished without further reported consequences.

The repeated appearance of fires in the municipality has attracted attention because of the dry summer conditions and the vulnerability of Ibiza's forests to rapid fire spread.

Ibiza Remains Highly Vulnerable During the Dry Season

Forest fires are a particular concern on Ibiza during periods of hot and dry weather.

Vegetation can become extremely dry during the summer, creating conditions in which even a relatively small fire can spread quickly.

For communities living close to wooded areas, the risk is especially concerning because residential properties can be located only a short distance from areas of flammable vegetation.
