The body of an adolescent has been found in the sea approximately six miles south of Formentera, in a discovery that authorities believe may be linked to the dangerous maritime migration route between North Africa and the Balearic Islands.

A Guardia Civil patrol boat located the body at around 4:00pm on Saturday, September 5, according to information confirmed by the Guardia Civil and reported by several local media outlets.

The teenager was found wearing a life jacket and the body was already in an advanced state of decomposition. IB3 reported that, including the woman's body, ten bodies believed to belong to migrants had already been found along Formentera's coast or waters during 2026 before the latest discovery.

Following the adolescent's death, the number reported by IB3 rose to eleven.

The figures refer to bodies believed to be connected to migration crossings and should not be interpreted as a confirmed identification of every victim.

A Weekend of New Arrivals

The latest discovery took place during a weekend marked by several new migrant boat arrivals across the Balearic Islands.

On Saturday alone, five boats reached or were intercepted around Mallorca, Cabrera and Formentera, with a combined total of 72 people aboard, according to figures attributed to the Government Delegation in the Balearic Islands.

Among those incidents, 11 people were located aboard a boat approximately three miles south of Formentera.

The contrast between these arrivals and the discovery of another deceased person highlights the dangers faced by people attempting the crossing in small vessels over open Mediterranean waters.
