Fire in Es Pujols Cuts Power to Homes and Businesses

September 04, 2026

An electrical fire in a building in Es Pujols, Formentera, left homes and businesses without power on Thursday after flames broke out in the building's electricity meter room.

The fire was reported at around 11:40am at a property on Avinguda Mediterrània, according to the Consell de Formentera.

Firefighters from the Consell's fire service attended the scene and extinguished the blaze. No injuries were reported.

Fire in the Meter Room

When firefighters arrived, they found the fire inside a room of approximately six square metres housing the building's electricity meters.

The team extinguished the flames before ventilating the affected space.

The response involved a rapid intervention vehicle, a light urban fire engine and a heavy rural fire engine, with a commander and three firefighters attending the incident.

Electricity Cut to the Building

Although the fire was brought under control, the incident meant that the building's electricity supply had to be disconnected.

The interruption affects the building's private homes, commercial premises and transformer station.

The power will remain disconnected until the necessary repairs to the damaged electrical installation can be completed.

For businesses operating in the building, the loss of electricity means they have been unable to operate normally while the repair work is pending.

Emergency Services at the Scene

The firefighters' operation lasted approximately two hours.

The service was completed at around 1:40pm, after the fire had been extinguished and the affected area ventilated.

Other emergency services also assisted at the scene, including Protecció Civil, the Formentera Local Police and the Guardia Civil.

No Injuries Reported

The Consell de Formentera confirmed that there were no reported injuries as a result of the fire.

The main consequence of the incident was therefore damage to the electrical installation and the resulting interruption to the building's power supply.

The cause of the fire has not been specified in the available reports.

Repairs Needed Before Power Can Return

With the meter room affected by the fire, the electricity supply cannot simply be restored until the damaged installation has been repaired.

The interruption affects multiple parts of the building, including both residential and commercial spaces.

This means residents and businesses in the property will have to wait for the electrical repairs to be completed before normal power service can resume.

A Busy Area of Es Pujols

Avinguda Mediterrània is located in Es Pujols, one of Formentera's main tourist and residential areas.

The building affected by Thursday's fire contains both homes and commercial premises, meaning the power interruption has consequences for both residents and businesses.

The incident was brought under control without injuries, but the disruption to the building's electricity supply is expected to continue until the damaged equipment can be repaired.
