Storm Adam Continues to Disrupt Flights at Ibiza Airport With Delays and Occasional Diversions

October 19, 2026

Thunderstorms continued to affect flight operations at Ibiza Airport on Monday, 19 October 2026, causing delays and occasional diversions as aircraft approached the island. Air traffic controllers warned that changing storm cells were creating difficulties for arrivals, with safety considerations influencing operations.

The disruption followed Sunday's severe weather, when torrential rain forced Ibiza Airport to suspend operations twice and caused widespread disruption to domestic and international flights.

Although airport operations resumed after Sunday's interruptions, the effects of the storm continued into Monday as airlines and airport teams worked amid unsettled weather conditions.

Storm Cells Complicate Aircraft Approaches

According to the latest reports, thunderstorms moving eastwards were complicating aircraft approach manoeuvres at Ibiza Airport on Monday.

Air traffic controllers warned of delays and occasional diversions to alternative airports as weather conditions changed. These measures were linked to operational safety rather than a general shutdown of the airport.

The situation remained fluid, with the impact on individual flights depending on the location and movement of storm cells.

No confirmed total for Monday's cancellations or diversions was available in the report reviewed.

Sunday's Storm Caused Major Flight Disruption

Monday's delays followed a particularly difficult day at the airport on Sunday, 18 October, when intense rainfall and accumulated water forced two temporary suspensions of operations.

The first interruption lasted from 10:00 to 11:00, followed by a second suspension between 11:15 and 12:15 while teams worked to remove water from several areas of the airfield.

According to figures provided by airport operator Aena to the EFE news agency, 27 flights had been cancelled and 16 diverted by 19:00 on Sunday. The affected services included domestic and international connections.

These figures relate to Sunday's disruption and should not be confused with Monday's ongoing delays.

Heavy Rain Also Affected Airport Facilities

The storm caused problems inside and outside the terminal. Water accumulated in several areas, while access to the P1 car park was temporarily closed after a canopy fell.

One of the two access lanes to the Express car park was also temporarily taken out of service.

The airport subsequently resumed operations, but the severe weather and accumulated disruption created further challenges for air traffic throughout the region.

Passengers Advised to Check Flights Before Travelling

With weather conditions continuing to evolve, passengers travelling through Ibiza Airport were advised to check directly with their airline before leaving for the airport.

Flight schedules can change at short notice when thunderstorms affect approach routes, and diversions may be necessary if an aircraft cannot land safely.

Travellers should also allow for possible delays to onward connections and follow updates from airlines and airport authorities.

As of Monday, 19 October, Ibiza Airport was operating, but thunderstorms continued to cause delays and occasional diversions. The situation could change as weather systems moved away from the island.
