Erol Alkan to Publish Book Chronicling Legendary London Club Night Trash

September 27, 2026

Erol Alkan is set to publish a new book documenting the history of Trash, the influential London club night he founded in 1997.

Titled Trash: A Club, A Sound, A Home, the book will be published by Faber on January 14, 2027, marking 30 years since the first Trash party and 20 years since the night came to an end.

Ten Years of Trash

Trash began as a Monday night at Plastic People in London before later moving to The Annexe and eventually The End.

Across its decade-long run, the club became known for bringing together indie, electro, post-punk, no wave and garage rock, creating a space where artists and audiences from different parts of London's music scene could overlap.

The night ended in 2007 at The End.

A History Told by Alkan and Its Community

The new book combines Alkan's own memories with interviews involving 39 people connected to Trash and its wider legacy.

More than 70 hours of conversations were recorded for the project, with contributors including Peaches, Justice, 2manydjs, Scissor Sisters, Felix Da Housecat, Tiga and Gonzales.

The book also looks at the cultural environment surrounding Trash and how the club brought together guitar music and electronic sounds during a period of major change in London's nightlife.

Artists Who Passed Through Trash

Trash hosted early performances from artists including LCD Soundsystem, Bloc Party, Hot Chip and the Klaxons.

Its DJ lineups also reflected its deliberately broad musical approach, with artists such as Felix Da Housecat, Chilly Gonzales, Peaches, Richard X and Tiga appearing alongside members of groups including Justice, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Factory Floor.

The club's genre-crossing approach later became associated with the wider electroclash, nu-rave and blog-house movements of the 2000s, although the book focuses on the specific environment that allowed Trash to develop rather than presenting it simply as a history of those genres.

Alkan Spent Two Years Writing

Alkan revealed that he spent the past two years working on the book, largely stepping away from remixing and production while continuing to DJ at weekends.

He said he would wake at 5am on weekdays and write until 8am, initially keeping the project largely private because he was unsure whether he could complete it.

Alkan was 22 when he started Trash and has described the experience as an important part of his development as a DJ and creative.

He has also reflected on the attitudes towards DJs and indie clubs at the time, saying he believed Trash helped change perceptions of the relationship between guitar music and dance culture.

Trash Is Not Returning

The announcement follows speculation that Trash could return in 2027.

Those rumours began after a cryptic post from the official Trash account referred to the 20th anniversary of the club's final night and suggested that there was "a light that never goes out."

However, Alkan's announcement of the book makes clear that the publication is not a confirmation of a club-night revival.

He has said that when Trash closed, he vowed never to bring the party back and that he has remained true to that decision.

January Launch Event

A launch event for Trash: A Club, A Sound, A Home will take place at Rough Trade East in London on January 11, 2027.

Alkan will appear in conversation with music journalist Kate Hutchinson before the book's official publication on January 14.

A special signed edition is also being offered with an exclusive CD compiled by Alkan featuring 20 tracks remembered from the Trash dancefloor.

The book will preserve the story of a club night that ran for ten years, while documenting the people, music and circumstances that shaped Trash rather than attempting to recreate the party itself.
