Paracetamol and anti-inflammatories among popular pharmacy purchases in Ibiza this summer

Paracetamol, ibuprofen, sun-care products and remedies for everyday holiday complaints have been among the familiar pharmacy purchases during Ibiza's busy summer months.

During the 2026 summer season, local pharmacists have reported demand for familiar everyday medicines and health products, with paracetamol and anti-inflammatory medicines such as ibuprofen among the products frequently requested by both visitors and residents.

The trend offers a more practical snapshot of life on a busy holiday island, where thousands of people are spending long days outdoors, changing their normal routines and sometimes dealing with the less glamorous side of summer travel.

Pain relief remains a familiar pharmacy request

Paracetamol and ibuprofen are among the most recognisable medicines found in Spanish pharmacies, and they are also among the products frequently sought by holidaymakers in Ibiza.

Headaches, muscular discomfort, minor aches and general pain can all lead visitors to make an unexpected pharmacy stop during their stay.

For many tourists, the pharmacy becomes part of the holiday routine in much the same way as a supermarket or beach shop, particularly when an otherwise minor problem threatens to interrupt a few days on the island.

The two medicines are not identical, however. Paracetamol is primarily used for pain and fever, while ibuprofen is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug that also has anti-inflammatory effects.

Sun exposure creates another seasonal demand

With Ibiza's long summer days and strong Mediterranean sunshine, it is perhaps unsurprising that sun-related problems also feature in the seasonal pharmacy picture.

Visitors spending hours on beaches, boats, terraces and around swimming pools can sometimes find themselves dealing with sunburn or irritated skin after too much exposure.

Sun protection products therefore remain an important part of the summer pharmacy market, alongside products designed to help care for skin after excessive sun exposure.

Pharmacists can also advise customers on appropriate products and when symptoms require professional medical attention rather than simple self-care.

Holiday routines can affect the stomach too

Digestive complaints are another common reason travellers may end up looking for a pharmacy.

Changes in diet, different meal times, heat, alcohol consumption and disrupted sleeping patterns can all contribute to stomach discomfort during a holiday.

Ibiza visitors may also be looking for products for headaches, insect bites, minor injuries and other everyday ailments that can appear during an extended stay away from home.

The result is a pharmacy shopping basket that can look very different during the height of summer compared with quieter periods of the year.

A pharmacy experience shaped by international visitors

Ibiza's international tourism market also creates a particular challenge for visitors who are used to seeing different brands and medicine names in their home countries.

A product that is familiar to a traveller from the UK, France, Germany or elsewhere may have a different commercial name in Spain, while some medicines may have different dispensing requirements.

That makes the advice of a pharmacist particularly useful for visitors trying to identify the appropriate local product.

Spanish regulations also distinguish between medicines that require a prescription and those that do not, meaning travellers should not assume that a medicine available over the counter at home will automatically be supplied in the same way in Spain.

For non-prescription medicines, Spain's medicines agency advises consumers to read the information supplied with the product, respect recommended durations of use and seek medical advice when symptoms persist.

The practical side of an Ibiza holiday

The pharmacy rush is a reminder that Ibiza's summer story is not only about clubs, DJs and packed beaches.

Visitors can spend their days swimming, hiking, cycling, sailing, exploring the island or simply moving between the beach and the nightlife, often in conditions very different from their normal routine.

Sometimes that means an unexpected stop at the local pharmacy becomes part of the trip.

The pharmacy trends do not provide an official ranking of the medicines sold across the island.
