Vox Files Complaint Against Balearic Government Delegate After Protests at Abascal Rally in Menorca

October 26, 2026

Vox has filed a criminal complaint against Alfonso Rodríguez, the Spanish Government’s delegate in the Balearic Islands, following clashes during a protest against party leader Santiago Abascal’s rally in Maó, Menorca, on Friday, 23 October 2026.

The party alleges that the authorities failed to take sufficient measures to protect the political event despite concerns about possible unrest. The complaint, announced on Saturday, 24 October, was submitted to the Court of Instance in Maó and also calls for an investigation into the organisers of the protest and those allegedly responsible for violent incidents.

The allegations have not been established by a court. The filing of a complaint does not in itself mean that a criminal offence has been committed or that the person named is guilty.

Protest Against Abascal’s Visit Ends in Police Intervention

The incident took place during a Vox rally led by Abascal in Plaça de la Conquesta in Maó. The CGT union had called a demonstration opposing his visit, under the slogan “Fuera fascistas de nuestros barrios” (“Fascists out of our neighbourhoods”).

Police had prepared a security operation for the event. However, tensions escalated as demonstrators gathered near the rally and the political meeting came to an end.

According to police information reported by Europa Press, officers charged against a group estimated at between 200 and 300 demonstrators as they attempted to clear the area and allow attendees to leave safely.

Other reporting put the wider counter-protest at around 400 people. These estimates refer to different accounts of the demonstration and the group involved in the police intervention.

What Vox Alleges in Its Complaint

Vox argues that the Government Delegation knew there was a risk of confrontation, citing incidents at previous Abascal events in A Coruña and Avilés. The party claims that the authorities did not deploy sufficient police resources to ensure the safety of the rally.

The complaint also alleges that some demonstrators moved beyond the designated protest area, blocked exits from the square and threw chairs and other objects at police officers.

Vox further alleges that Abascal’s vehicle was surrounded and struck by demonstrators as he left the area, with a chair hitting the vehicle.

The party has requested that investigators examine the circumstances surrounding the protest and the security arrangements. It has also asked for relevant documents to be made available, including records relating to the demonstration, risk assessments and police deployment orders, should preliminary judicial proceedings be opened.

Reports differ in how they describe the specific offences alleged in the complaint. The allegations must therefore be understood as claims made by Vox, rather than judicial findings against Rodríguez.

Woman Hospitalised After Police Charges

The clashes also resulted in an injury requiring hospital treatment. A 32-year-old woman was taken to Menorca’s Mateu Orfila Hospital after suffering multiple bruises during the police intervention.

The Menorca Health Area confirmed that she was discharged at approximately 10:00 on Saturday morning, after spending the night in hospital.

No arrests were reported following the incidents on Friday night.

The police operation took place as officers sought to clear the area around the rally and secure a route for attendees to leave. Accounts of the demonstration differ over the sequence of events and the conduct of those involved.

Més per Menorca Criticises Police Action

Més per Menorca condemned the police charges, describing them as repression against people demonstrating peacefully against the presence of Vox.

The party said Menorca should be a place of peace and coexistence and argued that the far right posed a threat to human rights, freedom and the island’s identity.

Its response reflects a different interpretation of the events from Vox’s account, which focuses on the alleged blocking of exits, attacks on police and the vehicle carrying Abascal.

The incident has therefore prompted criticism from opposing political perspectives, with Vox questioning the security arrangements and Més per Menorca condemning the police intervention.

Complaint Comes During Vox’s Visit to the Balearic Islands

The legal action was announced as Abascal continued his visit to the Balearic Islands, including a rally in Ibiza on Saturday, 24 October, at the Baluarte de Santa Lucía.

The complaint against Rodríguez centres on the authorities’ handling of the Maó protest and the security measures in place during the rally. Any criminal responsibility will depend on the assessment of the evidence and the outcome of the judicial process.

At the time of the announcement, the complaint had been filed, but no judicial finding of criminal wrongdoing by Rodríguez had been reported.
