Toledo High-Speed Train Collision Leaves at Least 64 Dead as Emergency Response Continues

October 28, 2026

At least 64 people have died following a collision between two high-speed trains near Urda, in Spain's province of Toledo, on Wednesday, 28 October 2026. The accident involved a Renfe AVE service and an Iryo train travelling on the Madrid-Andalusia rail corridor. Emergency teams remain engaged in rescue and recovery operations as authorities work to establish the full extent of the disaster.

Two High-Speed Trains Collide Near Urda

The collision occurred at approximately 08:54 local time near Urda, on the high-speed railway connecting Madrid with southern Spain. The trains involved were operated by Spain's state-owned rail operator Renfe and private operator Iryo.

According to the initial information released by railway infrastructure manager Adif, the incident involved a collision between two trains travelling on the same railway corridor. Reports indicated that two carriages derailed and fell down an embankment, complicating emergency operations at the scene.

The precise circumstances surrounding the collision remain under investigation. Early reports have suggested that the Renfe train struck the Iryo service from behind, but the final sequence of events and any contributing factors must be established through the official investigation.

Death Toll Rises as Rescue Operations Continue

The number of fatalities increased significantly as emergency crews continued working at the accident site.

The initial death toll reported by La Voz de Ibiza was at least 10. By the afternoon of 28 October, RTVE's live coverage was reporting at least 64 deaths, citing the Government Delegation in Castilla-La Mancha.

The casualty figures remain provisional while authorities continue rescue and recovery work. The full number of injured passengers and the final toll may not be established until the operation has progressed further.

Emergency services, including firefighters, Civil Protection personnel, Guardia Civil officers and medical teams, have been deployed to assist those affected. Medical resources were also mobilised to support the treatment and transport of injured passengers.

Castilla-La Mancha Activates Emergency Response Plan

The regional government of Castilla-La Mancha activated its Territorial Emergency Plan, known as PLATECAM, at 09:15 on Wednesday morning. At 10:30, the plan was raised to operational level 2, and the regional authorities requested the deployment of Spain's Military Emergency Unit to support the response.

Authorities also established facilities to assist affected passengers and their families, including accommodation in Urda and family-support points at several railway stations.

A dedicated information line was opened for relatives and friends seeking information about people potentially affected by the accident.

The emergency response involves coordination between regional authorities, railway operators, infrastructure managers, police, firefighters and medical services.

High-Speed Rail Services Between Madrid and Andalusia Suspended

The collision caused the suspension of high-speed rail services along the Madrid-Andalusia corridor, affecting connections between Madrid, Ciudad Real and destinations in southern Spain.

Adif confirmed the interruption and advised passengers to contact the relevant railway operators for information about their journeys. The disruption affected trains operating along the route, with services held at stations while the incident was managed.

Renfe also activated its crisis response arrangements and its assistance plan for victims and their families.

Passengers travelling between Madrid and Andalusia should check directly with their railway operator for the latest information about cancellations, alternative arrangements and ticket changes.

Investigation Into the Collision Underway

Investigators will need to establish how the two trains came into collision and why the incident occurred. Although preliminary reports have described a rear-end collision, this does not by itself establish the underlying cause or determine responsibility.

The investigation will be essential to clarifying the circumstances, including the sequence of train movements and the operation of the railway's signalling and safety systems.

As rescue efforts continue, authorities are focused on assisting the victims and their families, determining the full casualty figures and gathering the evidence needed to establish what happened.

The accident has caused extensive disruption to Spain's high-speed rail network and prompted a major emergency response across the region.
