The Necropolis of Puig des Molins offers one of the clearest connections to Ibiza’s ancient past. Located just outside the walls of Dalt Vila, the site contains one of the largest and best-preserved Phoenician and Punic burial grounds in the Mediterranean, reflecting the importance of Ibiza long before its modern identity took shape.
The cemetery was established by the Phoenicians in the 7th century BC, when Ibiza was known as Ibosim. Over the centuries, the burial ground expanded as different cultures settled on the island, leaving behind hundreds of underground burial chambers known as hypogea. Many were carved directly into the hillside and contain evidence of the customs, beliefs, and daily lives of the communities that used them.
Walking through the site provides a different understanding of Ibiza’s history from the monumental architecture found within Dalt Vila. The remains are closely connected to the island’s ancient relationship with the Mediterranean, its trading networks, and the successive civilisations that passed through Ibiza. The archaeological museum further explains the objects and discoveries uncovered at the site.
The quieter atmosphere of winter makes it particularly suited to a slower exploration of the necropolis and its surroundings. Visiting Puig des Molins adds another layer to understanding Ibiza, revealing an ancient island shaped by commerce, migration, religion, and cultural exchange long before it became a modern Mediterranean destination.
