Heavy Rain Floods Streets in Ses Païsses as Sant Antoni Records 38.9 Litres in One Hour

October 05, 2026

Heavy rain and thunderstorms affected Ibiza during the early hours of Saturday, October 3, with streets flooded in parts of the island and particularly visible disruption in ses Païsses, in the municipality of Sant Antoni de Portmany.

The storm brought intense rainfall and significant electrical activity during the night. In ses Païsses, water accumulated across the roadway, making circulation difficult for vehicles during the heaviest period of the rain.

38.9 Litres in One Hour in Sant Antoni

According to AEMET data, Sant Antoni de Portmany recorded 38.9 litres per square metre in just one hour during the episode.

It was the highest one-hour rainfall accumulation recorded in Ibiza during the event. Sant Joan de Labritja recorded the second-highest figure, with 36.2 litres per square metre in one hour.

The maximum rainfall figure should not be interpreted as a measurement specifically taken in ses Païsses. It corresponds to the reported Sant Antoni observation, while the flooding in ses Païsses was a visible consequence of the intense rainfall affecting the area.

Streets Flooded in Ses Païsses

The heavy precipitation caused substantial water accumulation on roads in ses Païsses.

Images recorded during the morning showed vehicles travelling through sections of roadway where water had accumulated to a significant depth, with parts of the pavement and roadside becoming difficult to distinguish beneath the water.

The situation was particularly noticeable during the early morning, when the most intense rainfall coincided with continued thunderstorm activity.

Sant Joan Also Records Intense Rain

Sant Joan de Labritja was also heavily affected by the rainfall.

AEMET recorded 36.2 l/m² in one hour in the municipality, making it the second-highest one-hour accumulation on Ibiza during the episode.

The intensity of the rainfall was not limited to one location, with different parts of the island experiencing heavy showers and thunderstorms during the night and into Saturday morning.

Storms and Electrical Activity Across Ibiza

The rainfall was accompanied by considerable thunder and lightning throughout the night.

The unstable weather affected several parts of Ibiza and Formentera, with the storm system producing repeated downpours and strong electrical activity.

The episode also caused other incidents around the island, including power cuts and fallen trees. A road between Sant Josep and Cala Vedella was temporarily affected by a fallen tree, while flooding was also reported on another public road.

Power Cuts Affect Hundreds of Customers

The storm also caused interruptions to the electricity supply in several areas of Ibiza.

Problems were reported on electricity lines serving areas including Benimussa and Espartar, while another incident affected Es Canar. At the height of the disruption, around 700 customers were affected, although the number had fallen as repairs progressed.

Radio broadcasting was also temporarily affected after an incident involving infrastructure in the San Lorenzo area, with several stations experiencing interruptions before service was restored.

Weather Alerts Remain Important

The intense rainfall followed a period in which Ibiza and Formentera had been under an orange warning for heavy rain and storms.

AEMET subsequently reduced the warning level to yellow for Saturday. The forecast continued to allow for locally heavy or very heavy showers and thunderstorms, particularly during the earlier part of the day.

The episode illustrates how quickly rainfall can produce localised flooding in Ibiza when significant amounts fall within a short period.

For residents and visitors, the authorities' advice during such conditions remains to exercise caution around flooded roads, avoid unnecessary travel during the most intense storms and follow official weather and emergency-service updates.
