British Tourist Arrested in Ibiza After Alleged High-Speed Escape From Guardia Civil Control

September 13, 2026

A 38-year-old British tourist has been arrested in Ibiza after allegedly failing to stop at a Guardia Civil traffic control and fleeing at high speed along the island's roads.

The incident took place at around 6:30am on September 4, when officers from the Guardia Civil Traffic Group were carrying out a preventive alcohol and drug control on the EI-600 road between Ibiza and Sant Antoni de Portmany.

Driver Allegedly Ignored Police Instructions

According to the Guardia Civil, officers signalled the vehicle to stop, but the driver ignored their instructions and accelerated away.

The escape reportedly put the officers at significant risk as the vehicle passed through the control point at speed.

Investigators subsequently began working to identify and locate the driver.

Dangerous Driving Recorded on Camera

After the vehicle fled the control, the driver continued towards Santa Eulària.

Images later obtained by investigators from social media and recordings made by other road users reportedly showed the same vehicle carrying out what authorities described as extremely dangerous manoeuvres during the journey.

The footage helped investigators reconstruct the vehicle's route and establish evidence of the alleged dangerous driving.

Arrested at a Santa Eulària Hotel

The investigation eventually led officers to a hotel in Santa Eulària, where the suspect was located and arrested in his room.

The man was arrested on suspicion of a road-safety offence relating to dangerous driving.

Authorities have not reported any collision or injuries resulting from the incident.

Up to Two Years in Prison

Under Spanish law, dangerous driving can constitute a criminal offence when the manner of driving creates a concrete danger to people's lives or physical integrity.

A conviction for the offence can carry a prison sentence of between six months and two years, together with a driving ban of between one and six years.

The suspect remains subject to the judicial process, and an arrest or charge does not establish guilt.

Investigation Followed the Vehicle Across Ibiza

The case demonstrates how footage recorded by members of the public can assist police investigations.

The Guardia Civil was able to use images circulated online together with information gathered during the initial operation to identify the vehicle and trace its movements after the driver escaped the control.

The subsequent arrest at the Santa Eulària hotel brought the search to an end.

Authorities Continue Summer Traffic Controls

The incident occurred during the busiest period of Ibiza's tourism season, when the Guardia Civil Traffic Group increases roadside controls targeting alcohol, drugs and other road-safety offences.

Such operations are intended to detect dangerous driving before it results in collisions or serious injuries.

In this case, the driver allegedly escaped the initial control but was later identified and arrested.

The case now moves to the courts, where the circumstances of the alleged dangerous driving will be examined.
