Ibiza Airport Sets New August Record With More Than 1.5 Million Passengers

September 17, 2026

Ibiza Airport recorded 1,519,201 passengers during August 2026, marking a 2.5% increase compared with August 2025 and setting a new record for passenger traffic during the month of August.

The figure, published by Aena, includes passengers arriving at and departing from the airport. It is the highest August total recorded at Ibiza Airport, exceeding the previous August record of 1,481,444 passengers registered in 2025.

More Than 1.5 Million Passengers in One Month

Of the 1,519,201 passengers recorded during August, 1,515,603 travelled on commercial flights.

National traffic accounted for 505,449 passengers, an increase of 6% compared with August 2025. International traffic remained considerably larger, with 1,010,154 passengers, although growth in this segment was more modest at 0.8%.

The remaining 3,598 passengers were associated with non-commercial traffic.

The UK Remains Ibiza's Largest International Market

The United Kingdom continued to be the largest international market for Ibiza Airport during August.

A total of 347,745 passengers travelled on connections between Ibiza and the UK. Italy followed with 230,832 passengers, ahead of Germany with 107,720, France with 90,890 and the Netherlands with 77,537.

The figures show the continued importance of European international routes to Ibiza's peak summer traffic.

Flights Increased Faster Than Passenger Numbers

The increase in airport activity was even more pronounced when measured by aircraft movements.

Ibiza Airport handled 13,643 aircraft movements in August, counting both take-offs and landings. That represents a 5.2% increase compared with the same month in 2025.

Passenger numbers therefore grew by 2.5%, while aircraft movements increased by more than twice that rate.

Nearly 6.8 Million Passengers So Far in 2026

The strong August figures pushed the airport's year-to-date total to 6,778,163 passengers between January and August.

That represents a 3% increase compared with the same period of 2025.

During the first eight months of the year, Ibiza Airport also recorded 63,056 aircraft movements, up 3.6% compared with the corresponding period last year.

August Remains Ibiza's Busiest Month

The latest figures underline the extraordinary concentration of airport traffic during Ibiza's peak summer season.

August alone accounted for more than 1.5 million passenger movements, while the airport handled 13,643 aircraft movements during the month.

The scale of the August traffic is particularly significant because Ibiza Airport operates in a highly seasonal market, with passenger numbers substantially lower outside the main summer period.

Record Traffic Amid Airport Expansion Debate

The new passenger record comes as the future of Ibiza Airport is the subject of an increasingly heated public debate.

The Spanish Government approved DORA III on September 15, with investment planned for Ibiza Airport as part of the airport network's 2027-2031 regulatory framework. Aena's planned remodelling includes new passenger-processing areas, additional boarding gates and infrastructure to separate Schengen and non-Schengen traffic.

Aena says the remodelling is intended to modernise the terminal and adapt it to new European requirements, while opponents of the project argue that expanded infrastructure could facilitate further growth in airport traffic.

Aena Says the Remodelling Will Not Increase Airport Capacity

The current airport debate has also focused on what the new infrastructure means for future passenger numbers.

Aena has stated that the planned increase from 17 to 32 boarding gates is linked to the need to separate Schengen and non-Schengen operations and comply with new border-control requirements. The company maintains that the project is a remodelling rather than an increase in the airport's authorised annual capacity.

The latest August figures nevertheless provide a clear picture of the scale of traffic already passing through the terminal during peak season.

Another Milestone for Ibiza Airport

Ibiza Airport ended 2024 with its highest annual passenger total at the time, recording more than 9 million passengers for the full year. August 2025 then established a new monthly August record before that figure was surpassed again in August 2026.

With 6.78 million passenger movements already recorded by the end of August, the airport is continuing to operate at historically high levels of traffic.

The latest figures show that Ibiza's peak summer airport activity is still growing, with both passenger numbers and aircraft movements increasing year on year.
