A routine traffic stop in Sant Antoni de Portmany led the Guardia Civil to a suspected burglary case after officers discovered more than €120,000 worth of high-value goods inside a vehicle.

The 44-year-old driver was arrested after officers found four large boxes in the car's boot containing clothing, designer handbags, suitcases and other personal belongings. Part of the haul was subsequently identified as property reported stolen from a home in Ibiza.

Suspicious Behaviour Led to the Search

The incident happened during the afternoon of August 18, when a Guardia Civil patrol conducting routine duties stopped a vehicle in Sant Antoni.

According to authorities, the driver began behaving suspiciously after noticing the police presence, prompting officers to inspect the vehicle.

Inside the boot, they discovered four large boxes.

When officers examined their contents, they found a substantial collection of personal belongings and luxury goods, including clothing, handbags from well-known brands and travel luggage.

The total value of the items was estimated at more than €120,000.

Some of the Items Were Reported Stolen

The investigation quickly established that the discovery was not simply a case of transporting expensive personal belongings.

After checking the items against previous police reports, officers determined that some of the recovered property matched items reported stolen during a burglary at a home.

This led to the driver's arrest on suspicion of burglary with forced entry.

He was subsequently placed at the disposal of the competent judicial authorities.

Investigation Into Other Possible Burglaries

The case is not considered closed.

The Guardia Civil is continuing its investigation to establish whether the suspect could be connected to other recent crimes on Ibiza.

Officers are also working to determine where the remaining recovered belongings came from so that they can be returned to their legitimate owners.

That means the value of the goods found in the vehicle could potentially be linked to more than one incident, although authorities have not yet established that connection.

Luxury Homes Remain a Target

The case comes amid continued concern over property crime targeting homes on Ibiza, particularly during the busy summer season.

The island has previously seen organised groups target luxury properties. In September 2024, the Guardia Civil announced the arrest of a group suspected of 22 burglaries and thefts from luxury homes, with the total value of stolen property estimated at around €548,500.

The latest arrest does not mean the same group is involved, and authorities have not made such a connection. However, the recovery once again highlights the scale of valuable property that can be involved in Ibiza residential burglaries.

A Routine Stop Uncovered a Major Haul

What began as a routine patrol in Sant Antoni ultimately uncovered a vehicle carrying more than €120,000 worth of goods, some of which had already been reported stolen.

The Guardia Civil is now trying to establish the full origin of the items and whether the suspect may have been involved in other offences across the island.

For now, the man remains a suspect, and the allegations against him have not been established by a court.
