Ibiza Tourism Sector Welcomes First Direct United Airlines Route to the US
August 26, 2026
Ibiza's tourism industry is celebrating a major new development in the island's international connectivity: United Airlines will launch the first direct air connection between Ibiza and the United States in 2027, linking Ibiza Airport with Newark Liberty International Airport in the New York area.
The Fomento del Turismo de Ibiza has described the new route as a strategic milestone for the island, saying it could help consolidate the growing North American market while also giving Ibiza residents a much easier way to travel to the United States.
United Will Fly Directly Between Ibiza and New York
United Airlines will begin operating the new route on May 31, 2027, with four flights per week in each direction during the summer season.
The service will operate between Ibiza (IBZ) and Newark (EWR), one of the main airports serving the New York metropolitan area.
United says Ibiza is one of eight new international destinations in its 2027 expansion where no other US airline currently offers a nonstop service.
The route is scheduled to operate with the airline's Airbus A321XLR, a new-generation aircraft designed to make longer international routes economically viable from smaller airports.
A Historic First for Ibiza
The new service will represent the first nonstop connection between Ibiza and the United States.
Until now, travellers from the US heading to Ibiza have generally needed to connect through another European or Spanish hub, such as Madrid, Barcelona, London or Paris.
That will change next summer, giving both American visitors and Ibiza residents a direct transatlantic option.
Fomento del Turismo president Alejandro Sancho described the announcement as particularly significant because it addresses a long-standing demand for improved connectivity with North America.
Tourism Industry Sees Major Opportunity
Fomento del Turismo believes the route can help strengthen Ibiza's position in the North American tourism market, which has shown increasing interest in the island.
The organisation says American visitors are increasingly attracted not only by Ibiza's nightlife, but also by its culture, gastronomy, heritage and wellness offering.
A direct flight could therefore make the island more accessible to travellers who may previously have been discouraged by the need for connecting flights.
The organisation expects the route to attract what it describes as a high-value visitor profile, potentially generating greater economic value for the island.
The American Market Is Already Growing
The new route comes as the US market has been gaining importance for Ibiza.
According to data cited by RTVE, American visitors accounted for 5.25% of international tourism to Ibiza between April and October 2025.
In June 2026, the number of American visitors increased by 22% compared with June 2025.
The Consell says approximately 115,000 Americans currently visit Ibiza each year, despite having to travel through connecting airports.
That existing demand was one of the reasons authorities and tourism organisations had been working for years to establish a direct connection.
Years of Work Behind the Route
Fomento del Turismo says it has been working alongside the Consell d'Eivissa for years to improve Ibiza's international connectivity.
That has included attending international tourism fairs and holding meetings with airlines and travel operators.
The Consell has also been using its Sistema de Inteligencia Turística (SIT Eivissa) to analyse the North American market and demonstrate that sufficient demand exists for a direct route.
The island's tourism authorities had initially hoped to secure at least one direct weekly service.
The announcement of four weekly flights therefore exceeds that original objective.
The Route Could Also Help Residents
The benefits aren't limited to tourism.
Fomento del Turismo has stressed that the connection will work in both directions, giving people who live in Ibiza a much faster way to reach the United States.
Instead of connecting through another European airport, residents will be able to board a direct flight to the New York area.
From Newark, passengers can also connect with United's extensive North American network, potentially opening up easier onward travel to other destinations across the United States and beyond.
A Debate Over Tourism Growth
The announcement has also prompted an interesting conversation about Ibiza's tourism strategy.
The Consell d'Eivissa has welcomed the route while insisting that improved international connectivity is compatible with its policy of tourism containment.
President Vicent Marí argues that the objective is not to increase visitor numbers indiscriminately, but to improve the quality and value of tourism and diversify the island's markets.
The new route will also operate into early October, which the Consell says could help extend activity beyond the busiest summer period rather than concentrating all additional demand in July and August.
That distinction is likely to remain an important part of the conversation as Ibiza considers how to balance international growth with pressure on the island's infrastructure and resources.
Ibiza Moves Closer to the US
For the island's tourism industry, however, the significance of the announcement is clear.
After years of discussions and efforts to establish a direct US connection, Ibiza will finally have a nonstop link with the New York area from May 2027.
Four weekly flights will give American travellers easier access to the island while opening a new transatlantic gateway for Ibiza residents.
And with the US market already growing, the tourism sector believes this could be the beginning of a much stronger relationship between Ibiza and North America.
