A taxi licensed in Palma de Mallorca has been fined €4,333 by the Consell de Ibiza after being detected at a taxi rank in Ibiza Town, in a case that has sparked a dispute between Ibiza authorities and the Balearic taxi sector.

The vehicle was identified during a joint operation involving Ibiza Local Police and the Consell de Ibiza's Transport Inspection Service. Authorities say the taxi was operating without the required local authorisation.

The driver was also given a separate €200 parking fine for leaving the taxi at a designated public transport taxi rank while the driver was absent. Combined, the two sanctions amount to €4,533.

Why Was the Taxi in Ibiza?

This is where the story becomes more complicated.

The Balearic taxi association disputes the allegation that the vehicle was operating commercially in Ibiza.

According to Biel Moragues, president of the Balearic taxi association, the taxi was carrying a group of seven people who were themselves taxi drivers from Palma and had travelled to Ibiza for a personal trip and lunch. The association says the group had return ferry tickets and was not looking for passengers or providing taxi services on the island.

The association accepts that the taxi should not have been parked in the designated taxi rank, but intends to challenge the €4,333 Consell sanction.

Moragues has also criticised the handling of the case, arguing that the statements of the other passengers were not included in the inspection report.

Ibiza Authorities Defend the Action

The Consell de Ibiza maintains that the case represents an example of the island's ongoing efforts to prevent unauthorised activity and so-called taxi intrusism during the busy summer season.

The island has increased transport inspections in recent weeks, targeting taxis and VTC vehicles operating without the necessary permissions or allegedly picking up customers outside the rules.

In one recent weekend operation, Ibiza transport inspectors reported 11 sanctions worth around €60,000, involving VTC vehicles and unlicensed taxi activity.

Further controls carried out at the end of August resulted in additional transport-related sanctions totalling €27,400.

The Taxi Had Already Been Detected on Ibiza

The same Palma-licensed taxi had reportedly been detected on the island earlier in August.

According to the Consell, vehicle-registration records from ferry operators show that the taxi arrived in Ibiza on August 18.

The taxi association confirms that visit but gives a different explanation: it says the driver had travelled to Ibiza with his daughters for the day and returned to Mallorca later.

The vehicle was subsequently identified again during a transport inspection near Ibiza Airport after the driver reportedly missed his planned ferry departure.

According to the driver's account reported by Cadena SER, he had gone to the ferry terminal to accompany four other taxi drivers who had travelled with him. When they missed the ferry, those passengers returned to Mallorca by plane, while the taxi remained on the island until the following day.

A Wider Focus on Ibiza's Transport Network

The incident comes during a period of intensified controls on Ibiza's transport sector.

Authorities are particularly focused on preventing vehicles from operating commercially without the correct authorisations, as well as unauthorised passenger collection.

For visitors to Ibiza, the wider enforcement campaign is intended to ensure that passenger transport services operating on the island comply with the applicable licensing and regulatory requirements.

At the same time, the Palma taxi case illustrates why individual incidents can be more complicated than an initial enforcement announcement suggests. The €4,333 sanction has been issued, but the taxi association disputes the allegation that the vehicle was actually providing an unauthorised service.

The case is therefore expected to continue as the association considers an appeal.
