Ibiza and Formentera are under a yellow weather warning for rain on Thursday 5 November, with the Spanish Meteorological Agency (AEMET) forecasting the possibility of up to 20 litres per square metre falling in just one hour. The warning is in force from midnight until 14:59, with locally heavy showers and occasional thunderstorms expected before conditions gradually improve during the afternoon.
The warning covers both islands and reflects the possibility of intense rainfall over short periods. AEMET classifies yellow as a low-level weather warning, but heavy downpours can still cause localised flooding and disruption, particularly in areas with poor drainage.
Rain and thunderstorms expected during the morning
AEMET forecasts cloudy to overcast skies across the Pitiusas, with showers that could become locally strong and occasionally be accompanied by thunderstorms.
The rainfall warning specifies a potential accumulation of 20 millimetres in one hour, equivalent to 20 litres of water per square metre. The probability of reaching this threshold is estimated at between 40% and 70%.
The weather is expected to become more settled as the day progresses, with cloud cover decreasing and conditions improving during the afternoon.
Temperatures in Ibiza are forecast to remain relatively mild, with a maximum of around 20°C.
The Balearic Government activates its Meteobal alert
Alongside AEMET's meteorological warning, the Balearic Government has activated the yellow alert level of its Meteobal emergency plan for Mallorca, Ibiza and Formentera.
The Directorate General of Emergencies has urged the public to remain cautious and follow official weather updates and self-protection advice.
Residents are advised to secure doors and windows, avoid leaving furniture or other loose objects outside where water could carry them away, and keep away from flood-prone areas such as basements and underground garages.
If flooding occurs inside a property, emergency services recommend switching off the main electricity supply when it is safe to do so and moving to higher areas of the building.
Drivers are also advised to reduce their speed, maintain a safe distance from other vehicles and use main roads rather than attempting to cross flooded sections.
Anyone facing an emergency should contact 112.
Weather expected to improve on Friday
The current forecast points towards a gradual improvement during Thursday afternoon as showers become less frequent and cloud cover decreases.
For Friday 6 November, the outlook is more stable, although isolated and occasional light showers cannot be ruled out.
Residents and visitors are encouraged to check AEMET's latest forecasts and warning updates, as weather conditions and warning periods can change.
