La Séptima Launches in Spain: Javier Ruiz Leads New National Television Channel With More Than 110 Journalists

05 November 2026 г.

Spain has a new national free-to-air television channel. La Séptima officially began its live programming at midday on Thursday, 5 November 2026, introducing a new general-interest broadcaster focused on news, current affairs, political analysis, debate, entertainment and humour.

Based in San Sebastián de los Reyes, Madrid, the channel is directed by journalist Javier Ruiz and promoted by media entrepreneur José Miguel Contreras, who also serves as its chief executive. Its launch follows the award of a new nationwide Digital Terrestrial Television (TDT) licence to Servicios Integrados de Entretenimiento Televisivo SL, known as SIETE.

The channel began its first live broadcast at 12:00, following a countdown and an introduction from Ruiz, who welcomed viewers with the words: "Welcome to La Séptima. It hasn't been easy. They haven't made it easy for us, but we're here and this is our new home."

A New National Channel With More Than 110 Journalists

La Séptima enters Spain's television market with a newsroom comprising more than 110 journalists, according to Javier Ruiz during the launch broadcast.

The channel is positioning itself around live programming, original production and a broad approach to national and international news. Its stated editorial ambitions include offering different perspectives, encouraging debate and presenting current affairs through a combination of reporting, interviews and analysis.

The launch took place while parts of the channel's facilities were still being completed. Ruiz showed viewers around the newsroom and production areas before introducing the presenters and programmes that will form the new channel's regular schedule.

José Miguel Contreras, the project's promoter and chief executive, was also present during the launch. He described the first day as a significant milestone after months of preparation and said the project had an initial investment of €20 million.

Andrés Varela, one of the project's investors, also attended the launch.

The Presenters and Programmes of La Séptima

The weekday schedule is built around several live programmes covering current affairs, politics, social issues and analysis.

The main presenters and programmes include:

El Pulso with Verónica Sanz (12:00–15:00)

Verónica Sanz leads the channel's opening weekday programme, beginning with a shorter introductory segment called El Primer Pulso. The format covers the main stories and developments shaping the day's news.

En Línea with Sarah Santaolalla (15:00–17:00)

Sarah Santaolalla presents a live programme focused on current affairs, different perspectives and public debate.

Sobre la Mesa with Rocío Delgado (17:00–19:00)

Rocío Delgado leads a programme covering subjects that affect everyday life, including culture, politics, health, education, consumer affairs, nutrition and artificial intelligence. It also examines misinformation and misleading claims.

La Diana with Noor Ben Yessef (19:00–21:00)

Noor Ben Yessef presents a programme centred on facts, data and the people behind the news, combining analysis with reporting from the field.

La Última Hora with Javier Ruiz (21:00–01:00)

Javier Ruiz leads the main evening programme, a four-hour live format combining interviews, news coverage, analysis and debate.

The programme also incorporates La Recta Final: El Observatorio de La Séptima, a daily electoral tracking project using an accumulated base of 3,500 surveys and specialist analysis of voting trends.

Weekend Programming Brings Entertainment and Humour

La Séptima will also offer a separate weekend schedule, combining current affairs, entertainment, comedy and cinema.

The announced weekend presenters and programmes include:

  • Fin de Semana: Presented by Luján Argüelles, beginning at 12:00 on Saturdays and Sundays.

  • La Comedia Nacional: Presented by Héctor de Miguel at 14:00, offering a humorous review of the week's events.

  • Fuera de Control: Presented by Alba Carrillo and Marta Márquez, airing from 17:00 to 21:00 on Saturdays and Sundays.

  • La Séptima Pantalla: A Saturday-night film programme featuring cinema without commercial interruptions, followed by a discussion.

The first edition of La Séptima Pantalla, scheduled for Saturday, 7 November, will feature La infiltrada and Bangkok Dangerous.

Javier Ruiz will also return on Sunday evenings with La Última Hora at 21:00.

Short news segments called El Relevo will connect the different programmes, while the schedule will also include morning repeats and overnight shopping television.

Carlos Cuerpo and Gabriel Rufián Among the Launch-Day Guests

The channel's opening day included a series of interviews and special guests.

Among the announced guests were Gabriel Rufián, Carlos Cuerpo and singer Víctor Manuel.

One of the main launch-day interviews was scheduled for 21:00 in La Última Hora, with Carlos Cuerpo, Spain's First Vice-President and Minister for the Economy, Trade and Business.

The channel also announced the publication of the first results of its daily electoral opinion survey, ahead of Spain's general election scheduled for 29 November 2026.

How to Watch La Séptima

La Séptima has a nationwide free-to-air broadcasting licence and is available through Digital Terrestrial Television (TDT).

The channel is also distributed through pay-TV operators and platforms, including Movistar, Vodafone, Orange and Digi, as well as through YouTube.

Its launch coincides with the wider reorganisation of Spain's TDT broadcasting system on 5 November, including the introduction of the DVB-T2 standard and the first new UHD transmissions on selected national channels.

However, La Séptima itself began broadcasting in HD, not UHD or 4K.

Viewers receiving conventional terrestrial television may need to perform an automatic channel search to locate the new service, depending on their television and existing channel configuration. Its position in the channel list is not necessarily number seven.

A New Addition to Spain's Television Landscape

The licence for the new national television service was awarded by the Spanish Council of Ministers on 26 May 2026 to Servicios Integrados de Entretenimiento Televisivo SL, or SIETE. Mediaset España was also among the companies competing for the licence.

The licence has an initial duration of 15 years and can be renewed for a further 15 years, subject to the applicable legal requirements.

With its launch now complete, La Séptima begins its operation as a new national broadcaster, combining a substantial live-news schedule with political analysis, entertainment and weekend programming.

Its first day marks the beginning of a new television project in Spain, with Javier Ruiz leading the editorial operation and José Miguel Contreras overseeing the wider initiative.
