More Than 373,000 People in Ibiza and Formentera on Solar Eclipse Day as Human Pressure Peaks in August

05 November 2026 г.

Ibiza and Formentera recorded exceptionally high numbers of people on 12 August 2026, the day of the total solar eclipse, when their combined population pressure reached approximately 373,000 residents and visitors. According to the latest Human Pressure Index (IPH) published by the Balearic Institute of Statistics (IBESTAT), Ibiza registered 336,449 people and Formentera 36,896.

The figures made 12 August the busiest day of August 2026 on both islands, coinciding with an astronomical event that attracted considerable public attention across the archipelago. However, despite the exceptional concentration, the Pitiusas did not surpass their previous all-time historical record, which remains 376,938 people, recorded in August 2017.

The figures form part of the latest August 2026 IPH statistics, which also reveal that the Balearic Islands as a whole recorded their highest-ever human pressure levels on the day before the eclipse.

Ibiza and Formentera Reach Their August Peak on 12 August

The latest figures show that Ibiza had 336,449 people present on 12 August, while Formentera recorded 36,896.

These were the highest daily figures for each island during August 2026. Both islands experienced an increase compared with the previous day, 11 August, when Ibiza registered 335,383 people and Formentera 36,494.

The increase between the two dates amounted to 1,066 people in Ibiza and 402 in Formentera.

Although the combined figure of approximately 373,000 was among the highest ever recorded in the Pitiusas, it remained below the historical peak of 376,938 people registered in August 2017.

Ibiza itself came particularly close to its previous record. Its 336,449 people on 12 August 2026 were just 453 below the historical maximum of 336,902, recorded on 9 August 2017.

Formentera also remained below its previous record. The island's historical peak stands at 40,994 people, registered on 11 August 2017.

Around 168,000 Non-Residents Estimated to Be Present in Ibiza

The comparison with registered population figures provides an indication of the scale of the visitor presence during the eclipse period.

According to the National Statistics Institute (INE), Ibiza had 167,988 registered residents on 1 July 2026. Compared with the 336,449 people estimated to be present on 12 August, this suggests approximately 168,461 people were visitors or other non-residents.

Formentera had 12,203 registered residents on 1 July. Against its estimated 36,896 people present on 12 August, the difference was approximately 24,693.

These are estimates derived by comparing two different statistical measures and dates. They should not be interpreted as exact counts of tourists who travelled specifically to watch the eclipse.

The Human Pressure Index measures the estimated number of people present on each island, including both residents and visitors.

The Balearic Islands Set an All-Time Human Pressure Record

While Ibiza and Formentera came close to their historical peaks, the Balearic Islands as a whole did establish a new all-time record.

On 11 August, the archipelago recorded 2,117,026 people, the highest figure in the historical series. On 12 August, the day of the eclipse, the total was 2,116,491, just 535 fewer.

According to the Govern, the islands had 1,266,279 registered residents at the end of July. This indicates that approximately 850,000 people present during the eclipse period were visitors or non-residents.

The highest figures were concentrated around the astronomical event. After 12 August, the archipelago's human pressure index began to decline, reaching 1,901,214 people by 31 August.

Mallorca and Menorca Also Showed Different Patterns

The daily figures varied across the islands.

Mallorca recorded 1,517,631 people on 12 August, following its highest figure of 1,515,899 the previous day. Its 12 August total was higher than the previous year's figure of 1,482,196 for the same date.

Menorca followed a different pattern. Its busiest day in August was 8 August, when 227,915 people were recorded simultaneously. Its peak therefore did not coincide with the eclipse itself.

The data demonstrate that the effect of the August peak was not identical across the archipelago, with Ibiza and Formentera reaching their monthly highs on the day of the astronomical event.

A Major Operational Deployment for the Eclipse

Anticipating a high concentration of people, the Balearic Government activated the ECLIPBAL civil protection plan to manage public safety, traffic, access to sensitive natural areas and emergency coordination.

The operation included 26 official observation areas distributed across Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza and Formentera. Nearly 3,000 personnel from different administrations and organisations were mobilised, with up to 2,147 professionals working simultaneously during the busiest hours.

Despite the exceptionally high human pressure, the 112 Emergency Coordination Centre recorded 46 incidents across the Balearic Islands during the 24 hours of 12 August. Eight were recorded in Ibiza and one in Formentera.

The Govern reported that the total number of incidents was lower than on comparable dates in previous years. It also reported lower-than-usual road traffic.

The August figures provide a significant record of the number of people present across the Balearic Islands during the 2026 summer season. They also show why human pressure is an important measure when considering tourism, infrastructure, mobility and the management of public spaces and natural environments.
