DANA Could Bring Heavy Rain to Ibiza and Formentera This Weekend as Temperatures Fall

October 14, 2026

Ibiza and Formentera could see a significant change in the weather this weekend, with a potential episode of heavy rain and falling temperatures after several days of unusually warm conditions for October.

Forecast models indicate that a retrograde DANA could develop over the Mediterranean, increasing atmospheric instability from Saturday, 17 October. Sunday and Monday could bring the greatest risk of unsettled weather, although the precise intensity and distribution of rainfall remain uncertain.

Warm Weather Expected Before the Change

The first part of the week is expected to remain relatively stable across the Pitiusas, with temperatures reaching approximately 25–27°C in Ibiza.

That pattern could begin to change from Thursday as the high-pressure system influencing the region weakens and shifts northwards. This would allow colder air to move south, potentially creating conditions favourable for a more unstable weather pattern over the weekend.

What Is a Retrograde DANA?

A DANA, known in Spanish as a Depresión Aislada en Niveles Altos, is an isolated pocket of cold air high in the atmosphere that separates from the main atmospheric circulation.

In a retrograde situation, the system moves from east to west rather than following the more usual west-to-east pattern. Its movement over the Mediterranean could contribute to the development of showers and thunderstorms across parts of the Balearic Islands.

The eventual impact depends on the system’s precise trajectory, the amount of moisture available and the interaction between upper-level cold air and winds near the surface.

Rain Could Intensify on Sunday

The forecast published on 13 October pointed to a growing risk of precipitation from Saturday, 17 October, followed by a potentially wetter Sunday, 18 October.

The latest municipal forecast available from Spain’s State Meteorological Agency also indicates a high probability of rain during the latter part of the forecast period, alongside lower temperatures.

The potential episode could affect a wider area of the western Mediterranean, including parts of the Balearic Islands, mainland Spain’s eastern coast and other Mediterranean regions. However, the location of the heaviest rainfall remains uncertain, and the available forecast does not establish exact rainfall totals for Ibiza or Formentera.

Temperatures Could Drop

The arrival of colder air could bring a noticeable change from the warm conditions experienced earlier in the week.

Forecast temperatures for Ibiza indicate daytime highs falling towards approximately 22–23°C over the weekend, with cooler conditions potentially continuing into Monday. Actual temperatures will depend on how the weather system develops.

Forecast Still Subject to Change

Meteorologists have stressed the uncertainty surrounding the possible DANA, particularly its eventual path and the intensity and distribution of rainfall.

Residents and visitors should follow the latest official forecasts and check for any weather warnings issued by AEMET before making outdoor plans or travelling by sea. A forecast of possible heavy rain should not be confused with an official severe-weather warning, and the situation may change as updated information becomes available.

For now, the outlook points to a possible transition from warm, relatively stable weather to a wetter and cooler end to the week across Ibiza and Formentera.
