Sor Josefa Costa, the Last Cloistered Nun Born in Ibiza, Dies at 89

October 14, 2026

Sor Josefa Costa Ramón, the last cloistered nun born in Ibiza, has died at the age of 89 at the Monastery of Sant Cristòfol in Dalt Vila, where she lived as part of the Canonesses Regular of Saint Augustine.

The Diocese of Ibiza announced her death on 13 October, remembering a life dedicated to prayer and service within her religious community.

A Life Dedicated to Faith and Community

Born in Can Fèlix, in Sant Jordi, Sor Josefa felt called to religious life at the age of 18. However, family circumstances meant she did not enter the congregation until 1967, when she was 30.

She subsequently devoted decades to contemplative life, liturgical prayer and the daily work of her community.

The Diocese highlighted her lifelong commitment to God and the religious community she served.

Life at the Monastery of Sant Cristòfol

Sor Josefa lived at the Monastery of Sant Cristòfol, known in Ibiza as ses Monges Tancades, in the historic quarter of Dalt Vila.

The monastery has long been associated with the island’s contemplative religious tradition. Sor Josefa was described by the Diocese as the last cloistered nun born in Ibiza, marking the passing of a distinctive connection between the island’s local community and this religious vocation.

Funeral to Take Place in Dalt Vila

The funeral for Sor Josefa Costa Ramón will be held on Wednesday, 14 October 2026, at 10:00 at the Monastery of Sant Cristòfol.

The service will be presided over by the Bishop of Ibiza, Monsignor Vicent Ribas.

Her death marks the end of a life shaped by faith, contemplation and decades of service within her religious community.
