Ibiza Airport Breaks Daily Traffic Record with 513 Flights on 1 August 2026

October 13, 2026

Ibiza Airport recorded 513 aircraft movements on Saturday, 1 August 2026, making it the busiest day in the daily traffic series published by EUROCONTROL, the European organisation that coordinates air traffic management. The total comprised 252 departures and 261 arrivals, setting a new peak for the airport in almost eight years of available daily records.

The figure was 9.1% higher than the busiest day of 2025, when the airport handled 470 movements. The record came during a summer of rising aviation activity on the island, with the number of flights increasing faster than passenger numbers.

513 Arrivals and Departures in a Single Day

The total of 513 movements means an aircraft took off or landed at Ibiza Airport an average of once every two minutes and 48 seconds across the 24-hour day.

The figure exceeded the previous record in the available series, which had also been set in 2026. On 25 July, the airport recorded 486 movements, followed by 483 on 8 August.

The concentration of high-traffic days is also notable. Three of the ten busiest days in the series since 2019 occurred during the 2026 summer season, according to the published analysis.

The daily figures count aircraft movements, meaning both take-offs and landings. They should not be confused with passenger totals, which measure the number of people travelling through the airport.

August Traffic Increased by 5.2%

The record day formed part of a particularly busy month at Es Codolar.

According to Aena's official August statistics, Ibiza Airport handled 1,519,201 passengers and 13,643 aircraft movements during the month. Passenger numbers increased by 2.5% compared with August 2025, while aircraft movements rose by 5.2%.

International connections accounted for 1,010,154 passengers, while domestic commercial flights carried 505,449. The remaining passengers were recorded in other categories included in Aena's overall total.

EUROCONTROL's daily data analysis put the average at 430.7 aircraft movements per day in August, compared with 409.6 in August 2025.

The peak-day increase of 9.1% was therefore greater than the overall monthly growth of 5.2%, indicating that traffic at the busiest point of the season increased faster than the monthly average.

The Airport's Hourly Operating Limit

The daily record also brings attention to the distinction between total daily traffic and the number of aircraft an airport can handle in a particular hour.

The published report identifies a limit of 28 aircraft movements per hour under the parameters used for allocating airport slots during the summer 2026 season. That figure comprises a maximum of 16 arrivals and 16 departures, subject to a combined limit of 28 movements.

A total of 513 movements across 24 hours equates to an average of approximately 21.4 per hour. However, a daily average cannot establish how many individual hours operated at the limit. That would require detailed hourly traffic figures.

The record therefore demonstrates the intensity of activity across the day, but does not by itself establish that the airport exceeded its hourly operating capacity.

What the Record Means for the Airport's Redevelopment

The record comes amid continuing discussion about plans to modernise Ibiza Airport.

Aena's proposed redevelopment focuses on improving terminal facilities and passenger flows rather than increasing the capacity of the runway. The distinction matters because an airport's ability to process passengers inside its terminal is different from the number of aircraft movements it can accommodate per hour.

The Spanish airport operator has reported that the planned works will not increase the number of take-offs and landings the airport can handle per hour. The redevelopment is intended to improve the passenger experience and the operation of the terminal.

The airport's daily traffic record provides a concrete illustration of the demand experienced during the summer peak. It does not, on its own, determine the extent of terminal congestion or establish how much additional passenger-processing capacity the planned works will deliver.

A Record Set During Ibiza's Peak Season

Ibiza Airport is a key transport link for both Ibiza and Formentera, and its traffic is strongly concentrated in the summer tourist season.

The 513 movements recorded on 1 August represent the highest daily total in the available EUROCONTROL series, while the wider August figures show that the increase was not limited to a single day.

With passenger numbers and aircraft movements continuing to rise, the relationship between peak-season demand, runway capacity and terminal facilities will remain central to discussions about the airport's future.
