Hospital Can Misses treated 26,507 emergency cases between April and August 2026, around 4% fewer than during the same period last year, despite Ibiza's population increasing substantially during the main tourism months.

The figures were provided by the Ibiza and Formentera Health Area following a request for a summer assessment, and show a decline in emergency attendances in every month from April through August.

Emergency Cases Fall Month After Month

In April, Can Misses recorded 4,518 emergency visits, compared with 4,591 in April 2025.

May saw 5,064 cases, down from 5,136 a year earlier, while June recorded 5,185 compared with 5,526.

The decline continued into the heart of the tourist season. July registered 5,866 emergency cases, compared with 6,049 in 2025, while August recorded 5,874 compared with 6,259 last year.

The August reduction was therefore 385 cases, despite being one of the busiest months for Ibiza's population.

More Than 39,000 Emergencies So Far in 2026

Looking beyond the main summer period, Can Misses has handled 39,511 emergency cases during the first eight months of 2026.

That is 1,753 fewer than during the same period of 2025, representing a decline of 4.25%.

The figure is notable because Ibiza experiences a major increase in its population during the tourism season, placing additional pressure on healthcare infrastructure.

Serious Incidents Continue

The lower overall number of attendances does not mean that the Emergency Department has had an uneventful summer.

Several serious incidents have required emergency treatment at Can Misses.

Among them was a road collision in June involving a car and a van on the road between Ibiza and Santa Eulària, which left a 41-year-old woman in intensive care with multiple injuries. Four other people were also injured.

A few days later, two young people were rescued after their vehicle went down an embankment in Cala d'Hort. They suffered minor injuries.

First Balconing Case of the Season

The summer also saw the first recorded case of balconing of the season.

On May 7, a young British tourist suffered a fall from the second floor of a hotel in Sant Antoni.

He was admitted to Can Misses in serious condition and spent several days in intensive care before being transferred to a hospital ward, where his condition subsequently improved.

Waiting Times Have Also Improved

Alongside the reduction in emergency attendances, the hospital has reported an improvement in the average time required to resolve cases.

According to the latest figures, the average resolution time in September is 6.7 hours.

That compares with 9.2 hours at the end of the previous legislative term, a reduction of almost three hours.

The health authorities acknowledge that there were still periods of significant delays during the busiest parts of the summer.

Emergency Staff Has Increased

The improvement in waiting times coincides with a substantial increase in the Emergency Department workforce.

The hospital's figures show that the emergency team has grown by 36.8% since 2023, from 76 professionals in July 2023 to 104 today.

The nursing team has increased from 49 to 67, while healthcare assistants have risen from 27 to 37.

The number of hospital emergency doctors has grown from 29 to 33, while the number of orderlies remains at 30.

A further doctor is due to join the service on September 16, after the main high-season period has ended.

Extra Support for Paediatric Care

Paediatric emergency care has also received additional support during the summer.

Since the beginning of August, paediatricians from Primary Care have been reinforcing the service at Can Misses.

The Health Area describes this arrangement as a pioneering approach designed to strengthen paediatric care during periods of increased demand.

A Different Summer for Can Misses

The latest figures provide an interesting picture of healthcare demand in Ibiza during the 2026 tourism season.

Although the island's population rises sharply during the summer and serious accidents and incidents continue to place pressure on the hospital, the total number of emergency attendances has fallen compared with 2025.

At the same time, the hospital reports shorter resolution times and a larger emergency workforce.

For Ibiza, the combination suggests that the pressure on Can Misses cannot be measured simply by the number of patients arriving at the emergency department. The severity of individual cases, staffing levels and the time required to treat patients all remain important indicators of how the health system performs during the island's busiest months.

With 39,511 emergency cases already recorded in 2026 and the summer peak now behind the island, the coming months will show whether the downward trend in attendances continues.
