Balearic Islands Welcome 11.76 Million International Tourists Through August, Up 2%

October 03, 2026

The Balearic Islands welcomed 11,760,942 international tourists between January and August 2026, representing a 2.0% increase compared with the same period last year, according to the latest provisional figures from Spain's National Statistics Institute (INE).

The data comes from the INE's FRONTUR survey of tourist movements at borders and covers international visitors whose main destination was the Balearic Islands.

The figures place the Balearic Islands second among Spain's autonomous communities for international tourist arrivals during the first eight months of the year, behind Catalonia with 14.32 million visitors. Andalusia followed with 11.08 million.

August Brings 2.6 Million International Visitors

In August alone, the Balearic Islands received 2,596,458 international tourists.

That was 2.6% more than in August 2025 and represented 21.2% of all international tourists visiting Spain during the month.

The Balearics were therefore Spain's leading autonomous community by share of international tourist arrivals in August, ahead of Catalonia and Andalusia.

The August figure also represents a substantial proportion of the islands' annual tourist activity, reflecting the continued concentration of international tourism during the summer season.

International Tourist Spending Reaches €4.07 Billion in August

International visitors spent €4.065 billion in the Balearic Islands during August, according to the INE's EGATUR expenditure survey.

That was 4.2% more than in August 2025 and represented 22.8% of all international tourist spending recorded across Spain during the month.

Average spending per international tourist in the Balearics was €1,566, an annual increase of 1.6%.

Average daily spending reached €243, up 10.1% year on year, while the average trip lasted 6.4 days, 7.7% shorter than a year earlier.

Balearics Account for 16.4% of Spain's Tourist Spending So Far This Year

Looking at the first eight months of 2026, the Balearic Islands accounted for 16.4% of Spain's total international tourist expenditure.

The figure places the islands alongside the Canary Islands, which also represented 16.4% of Spain's accumulated international tourist spending through August. Catalonia accounted for the largest share, at 18.9%.

The national total reached €99.892 billion in international tourist spending between January and August, an 8.0% increase compared with the same period in 2025.

Spain Records Strong Growth in International Tourism

Across Spain, 12,256,087 international tourists arrived in August, 9.2% more than during the same month of 2025.

For the first eight months of the year, Spain received 70,362,493 international tourists, an increase of 5.4% compared with the same period last year.

The Balearic Islands' 2.0% growth therefore remains below the national increase in international arrivals, although the islands continue to rank among Spain's principal destinations.

What the Figures Mean for Ibiza

The latest statistics underline the continued importance of international tourism to the Balearic Islands, but they should not be interpreted as a direct visitor count for Ibiza.

FRONTUR assigns tourists to their main destination at the autonomous-community level. The Balearic figure therefore covers Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza and Formentera collectively and does not provide a separate Ibiza total in this release.

The figures also measure international tourists, rather than all visitors to the islands. Domestic tourism and other categories are not included in these particular totals.

For Ibiza, the regional figures provide an important picture of the wider tourism market in which the island operates, but they should not be presented as an Ibiza-specific arrival figure.

Provisional Data

The latest FRONTUR and EGATUR results are provisional.

The INE states that the figures will be revised in March 2027, meaning the current totals and growth rates may subsequently change.

For now, the latest official figures show that the Balearic Islands received 11.76 million international tourists through August, up 2.0% year on year, while August alone brought 2.60 million international visitors and €4.07 billion in international tourist spending.
