Manumission Returns to Ibiza: The Story Behind the Party That Changed Club Culture

October 03, 2026

One of the most famous names in Ibiza nightlife has returned to the island.

Manumission, the legendary party that became synonymous with the freedom, creativity and excess of 1990s Ibiza, returned in September 2026 for the first time since the original party ended in 2008.

The comeback took the form of Le Weekend Manumission, a three-day programme held from 25 to 27 September across Ibiza Rocks, 528 Ibiza and Pikes. The centrepiece was a 12-hour event at 528 Ibiza on Saturday 26 September, built around the atmosphere and creative spirit of Manumission's celebrated 1998 era.

How Manumission Arrived in Ibiza

Manumission was created by brothers Mike and Andy McKay, alongside Claire Davies, and emerged from Manchester's nightlife and countercultural scene before making its way to Ibiza.

The party arrived on the island in 1994, initially taking over Coco Loco at Ku Club, the venue that would later become Privilege. From there, Manumission developed into one of Ibiza's most distinctive nightlife concepts.

It was never simply about a DJ playing music to a crowd.

Manumission combined electronic music with theatre, performance, art, elaborate characters and a deliberately unconventional atmosphere. Its philosophy centred on freedom and self-expression, helping distinguish it from the increasingly conventional club format of the era.

The Manumission Motel

Perhaps the most enduring symbol of the Manumission era was the Motel.

In 1998, Mike and Claire took over a former 15-room property on the outskirts of Ibiza Town and transformed it into the Manumission Motel. The venue became an extension of the party itself, attracting DJs, performers, artists, musicians and other figures from Ibiza's nightlife world.

The Motel became an important part of Manumission's mythology because it operated outside the conventional boundaries of a nightclub.

It was a place where the party could continue beyond the club, reinforcing the sense that Manumission was attempting to create an entire temporary world rather than simply another weekly event.

From Privilege to Amnesia

During its most successful years, Manumission became closely associated with Privilege, where its large-scale productions helped establish the party as one of the major attractions of Ibiza's clubbing calendar.

In 2007, Manumission moved to Amnesia. Its 2008 season followed with a theatrical concept inspired by Coney Island, combining elaborate production with a programme of DJs and performers. Contemporary coverage described the move to Amnesia as the beginning of a new chapter for the party.

That chapter proved to be the final one.

Manumission ended in 2008, after more than a decade on the island. Sources differ on the precise circumstances surrounding the final season, but contemporary and retrospective accounts agree that the move to Amnesia preceded the party's eventual closure.

Why Manumission Became So Important

Manumission arrived during a period when Ibiza was developing its international reputation as a centre of electronic music and nightlife.

What made it distinctive was the way it treated the club as a theatrical environment.

Rather than separating music, performance and audience, Manumission deliberately mixed them together. Its shows incorporated performers, unusual characters, visual storytelling and elements of underground and queer culture alongside electronic music.

The result became part of the mythology surrounding 1990s Ibiza.

The party also helped demonstrate that a club night could become a cultural identity of its own, rather than simply an event taking place inside a venue.

Manumission Comes Back in 2026

After 18 years away, the founders brought the name back to Ibiza in September 2026.

Le Weekend Manumission opened at Ibiza Rocks on Friday 25 September before moving to 528 Ibiza for its main event on Saturday. The weekend concluded at Pikes on Sunday 27 September with the Carry On Cowboy concept.

The main 528 Ibiza production was designed around a recreation of the spirit of the summer of 1998.

For the first time at 528, all five stages were connected through a single immersive storyline, with indoor and outdoor areas transformed into an interconnected environment. The production incorporated music, theatre, performance and art across 12 hours.

David Morales and Carl Craig were among the artists announced for the central event, while much of the wider musical programme was deliberately kept secret in keeping with the Manumission tradition.

A New Chapter for an Old Ibiza Name

The 2026 return was not simply a recreation of a 1990s club night.

The organisers presented Le Weekend as a new chapter built around the history and ideas associated with Manumission, while using contemporary venues and production.

The reunion also brought Mike and Claire Manumission back together with Andy McKay, whose current Ibiza interests include Pikes and Ibiza Rocks. The return was described by Andy as both a significant moment for Ibiza's dance music community and a personal reunion after years of family difficulties.

The fact that Manumission could return 18 years after its original closure and still command attention says something about the lasting place it occupies in Ibiza's club culture.

Its original era is gone, but the name remains closely connected with a period when Ibiza nightlife was becoming increasingly theatrical, experimental and internationally influential.

In 2026, Manumission has opened a new chapter rather than simply reopening the past.
