Mallorcan Woman, 26, Confirmed Among Victims of Deadly Train Collision in Toledo

November 02, 2026

María del Carmen García Guevara, known as Mari Carmen, a 26-year-old woman born in Inca, Mallorca, has been confirmed among the victims of the railway disaster in Urda, Toledo, after several days of uncertainty and an extensive search by her family.

The young woman was travelling on the high-speed train involved in the collision with an Iryo service on Wednesday, 28 October 2026. She was heading to Seville for work, accompanied by a colleague and two photographers.

Although reports of her identification began circulating on Friday, 30 October, her family received official confirmation of her death on the evening of Saturday, 31 October, following the identification process. The news was subsequently confirmed by the family to the authorities and the media in Rute, Córdoba, where she also had close family connections.

Travelling to Seville for Professional Reasons

Mari Carmen was travelling in carriage 7 of the high-speed train involved in the collision. She was part of a group of four colleagues travelling to Seville for a professional engagement.

She was born in Inca, Mallorca, and was living and working in Madrid. She was employed in the communications and marketing sector.

Her disappearance following the accident prompted an increasingly urgent search involving her family, colleagues and people who shared appeals for information on social media.

Family Spent Days Searching for Her

Her parents travelled to the Spanish mainland after losing contact with her following the collision. They filed a missing-person report with the Guardia Civil and visited hospitals in Madrid and Toledo in an attempt to establish whether she had been among those injured and transferred for treatment.

The search was made more difficult by confusion surrounding information about the whereabouts of some passengers in the immediate aftermath of the disaster.

The Guardia Civil had established procedures for identifying missing passengers, including collecting DNA samples from close relatives to help identify victims.

After several days without definitive news, the family received confirmation on Saturday evening that Mari Carmen had been identified among those who died.

Born in Mallorca, with Strong Family Ties to Rute

Although Mari Carmen was born in Inca and had lived and worked in Madrid, her family also had deep connections to Rute, a municipality in Córdoba.

Her parents were originally from Rute before moving to Mallorca, where she was born. Other members of her extended family also live in the Córdoba municipality.

The town's mayor, David Ruiz Cobo, had been in contact with the family during the search and offered the municipality's support.

Following confirmation of her death, the Ayuntamiento de Rute expressed its condolences to her family, friends and loved ones, acknowledging the profound loss suffered by those close to her.

The Balearic Government Had Previously Expressed Concern

On Friday, 30 October, before the family received official confirmation, the Balearic Government issued an institutional statement expressing condolences to the victims of the accident while specifically referring to Mari Carmen as missing.

The regional government said it shared the family's uncertainty and offered its support and assistance while the search continued.

Following confirmation of her death, Balearic President Marga Prohens also expressed her condolences to the young woman's family and friends.

The tragedy has deeply affected both Mallorca, where Mari Carmen was born, and Rute, where her family has longstanding roots.

Her death is another personal loss in the devastating railway collision in Urda, which has left families across Spain grieving for those who lost their lives.
