English professional golfer Charley Hull has recalled a teenage night out in Ibiza that nearly left her with a permanent tattoo across her forehead. Instead, thanks to the intervention of her best friend, James, she ended up with a tattoo on her foot bearing the words “Hold Tight”.

The story emerged in a candid Q&A with Golfweek, in which the 30-year-old LPGA star discussed her three tattoos and shared the story behind her first. GolfMagic published an account of the interview on 20 October 2026.

Hull said she was 17 when she went partying with James in Ibiza. On their way back from a club, she decided that getting a tattoo across her head would be a good idea, inspired by the phrase the pair regularly used with each other: “Hold tight”.

Her Best Friend Stepped In

Fortunately for Hull, James was not convinced by the idea of a forehead tattoo. He persuaded her not to go ahead with the placement, although the pair still decided to get matching tattoos.

Hull had the words “Hold Tight” tattooed on her foot, while James got the same phrase on his arm.

The following morning, Hull woke up hungover and noticed that her foot was wrapped in a plastic bag. She initially had no memory of getting the tattoo and asked James whether she had really been that drunk the previous night.

He explained that the wrapping was from the tattoo session and reminded her that he had stopped her from getting the words across her forehead.

The anecdote offers a humorous glimpse into Hull's life before she became one of the most recognisable personalities in women's professional golf.

The Three Tattoos She Has Today

The Ibiza story was not the only tattoo-related revelation in Hull's interview. She said she has three tattoos, including the “Hold Tight” design on her foot.

Another is the name of her former husband, English mixed martial arts fighter John “Ozzie” Smith, on her wrist. Hull said she has tried to have that tattoo removed.

Her third tattoo is a matching lightning bolt shared with fellow English golfer and close friend Georgia Hall. Hull's design is on her right little finger, with Hall wearing the matching tattoo in the same position.

Explaining the meaning behind the lightning bolts, Hull said they represented the strength of their friendship and their support for one another.
