Milena Herrera Calls for Strong PSOE Majority to Defend Pensions and Housing Ahead of Spain’s 29 November Elections

October 19, 2026

Ibiza-born PSOE candidate Milena Herrera has called for a broad Socialist majority in Spain's Congress of Deputies in the general elections scheduled for 29 November 2026, arguing that the result will determine the party's ability to continue pursuing policies on pensions, housing affordability and social rights.

Herrera made the remarks on Saturday, 17 October, during a meeting of the PSOE Federal Committee in Fuenlabrada, near Madrid. The meeting, chaired by Spanish Prime Minister and PSOE secretary-general Pedro Sánchez, formally approved the party's candidate lists for the upcoming election.

Herrera will again stand as part of the PSOE list for the Balearic Islands, headed by former Balearic president and current Congress speaker Francina Armengol. Herrera is placed third on the list.

Pensions and Public Services Among PSOE Priorities

Herrera argued that the PSOE needs a broad majority in Congress to continue advancing its social policy programme.

She highlighted the protection of the welfare state and the public pension system, describing both as central to safeguarding social protection and citizens' rights.

The candidate also emphasised the importance of maintaining public services and social benefits, placing pensions alongside housing, healthcare and education among the issues she wants to prioritise during the election campaign.

Her remarks form part of the PSOE's broader appeal to voters to support the continuation of the current government's social policies.

Herrera Criticises PP and Vox Over Women's Rights

The Ibiza candidate also addressed equality and women's rights, criticising the positions of the conservative Partido Popular (PP) and the right-wing Vox party.

Herrera argued that the rights achieved through previous equality measures should be protected and that Spain should not reverse progress in this area.

Her comments reflect the PSOE's political positioning ahead of the election, with equality and the protection of women's rights expected to feature among the issues debated during the campaign.

Housing Affordability in Ibiza and the Balearic Islands

Housing was another central theme of Herrera's intervention. She highlighted the difficulty of accessing affordable accommodation in the Balearic Islands, particularly in Ibiza, where housing costs have become a major concern for residents.

Herrera argued that alternative policies could help address the problem, specifically pointing to the possibility of regulating rental prices and increasing the availability of affordable housing.

“There is another model: rental prices can be capped and affordable housing can be provided,” she said, according to the published report.

Her remarks underline the PSOE's intention to make housing a central issue in the campaign, particularly in regions where residents face difficulties finding homes they can afford.

The PSOE's Candidate List for the Balearic Islands

The Socialist candidate list for the Congress of Deputies in the Balearic Islands is headed by Francina Armengol, with Menorcan politician Marc Pons in second place and Milena Herrera in third.

Herrera has been a member of Congress since 2023. During the current legislature, she has served as the PSOE's spokesperson on gender-based violence and participated in parliamentary work related to island-specific issues.

Her previous work has included involvement in the mixed parliamentary commission on insularity and initiatives concerning constitutional reform to provide Formentera with its own senator. She has also supported measures relating to the insularity allowance and free public transport.

The PSOE's campaign will focus on housing, pensions, public services and social rights as it seeks voter support ahead of the 29 November general election.

Herrera concluded her appeal by reiterating that a broad Socialist majority in Congress would be necessary, in the party's view, to continue implementing the policies she defended during the meeting.
