A 63-year-old woman has died in Felanitx, Mallorca, after being swept away by intense floodwater during a powerful storm that caused widespread disruption across the island on Wednesday, September 9.

The woman, who was a resident of the municipality, was found in the street in cardiac arrest at around 3pm on Calle Bellpuig. Witnesses attempted to revive her before emergency medical teams arrived, but she could not be saved.

The incident was the most serious emergency recorded during an afternoon of heavy rain, thunderstorms and strong winds across the Balearic Islands.

According to the Balearic Government's emergency services, 173 incidents had been registered across the islands by 8pm on Wednesday, with 149 of them occurring in Mallorca.

Woman Swept Away by Torrential Water

The incident took place at approximately 3pm on Calle Bellpuig in Felanitx.

According to preliminary information from the Guardia Civil, the woman appears to have slipped or stumbled while walking along the street. Heavy rainfall had left water moving rapidly through the area, and she was subsequently swept away.

Local reporting indicates that the flow of water was strong enough to carry her towards a parked vehicle, where she became trapped underneath it.

The exact sequence of events remains under investigation, and authorities have not yet established all the circumstances surrounding her death.

Witnesses Tried to Save Her

Several people who discovered the woman alerted emergency services after finding her lying on the ground in cardiac arrest.

Witnesses immediately began performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation while waiting for medical assistance.

SAMU 061 emergency medical personnel and a local doctor subsequently continued resuscitation attempts, but despite the efforts of the witnesses and healthcare professionals, the woman died at the scene.

The Guardia Civil's Judicial Police team from Manacor has taken charge of the investigation and attended the scene to gather evidence and establish exactly how the fatal incident occurred. The Local Police of Felanitx also intervened.

Mallorca Bears the Brunt of Major Storm

The death occurred during an intense weather episode that affected much of the Balearic Islands on Wednesday.

The Balearic Government reported 173 emergency incidents by 8pm, including 149 in Mallorca, seven in Menorca, two in Ibiza and 15 where the location had not been established. Authorities identified the fatal incident in Felanitx as the most serious event of the episode.

Fallen trees, flooding and overflowing water were among the most common problems reported across Mallorca.

Palma was particularly affected, while other municipalities including Esporles, Manacor, Calvià, Felanitx, Llucmajor, Banyalbufar, Marratxí and Valldemossa also recorded incidents.

The storm caused disruption to roads and public services, with emergency crews responding to multiple reports of flooding and storm damage.

Emergency Services Responded Across the Islands

The scale of the emergency response illustrates how quickly conditions deteriorated across Mallorca during the afternoon.

In addition to flooding, strong winds caused trees and other objects to fall, while torrential rainfall created dangerous conditions on roads and in urban areas.

The storm also affected transport and infrastructure in parts of the island. The University of the Balearic Islands suspended afternoon academic activity in Palma following damage caused by the weather, while lightning affected the overhead electrical system serving the metro connection between the university area and central Palma.

AEMET had also warned of severe marine and atmospheric conditions around the Balearic Islands, including very heavy showers and thunderstorms, possible hail and strong wind gusts. Coastal waters were affected by deteriorating conditions and significant waves.

Felanitx Cancels Local Festivities

The tragedy also led the Felanitx Town Hall to suspend the celebrations planned in Cas Concos on Wednesday evening.

Mayor Catalina Soler was informed of the woman's death and, according to the municipality, the decision was taken both as a gesture of respect towards the family and because of the continuing adverse weather conditions.

The town council expressed its condolences to the woman's relatives.

Several areas of Felanitx experienced flooding during the afternoon, although local authorities reported that conditions had largely returned to normal after 6pm.

Investigation Into the Fatal Incident Continues

The Guardia Civil investigation remains ongoing.

At this stage, authorities' preliminary hypothesis is that the woman lost her footing while walking through the affected street and was then overcome by the rapidly moving water.

The investigation will establish the precise circumstances, including how the flooding developed at the location and the sequence of events between the woman's fall and her death.

Authorities have not suggested that the woman was involved in any other incident, and the available information currently points to a tragic weather-related accident.

The fatality in Felanitx came as Mallorca experienced the most severe impact from the storm system affecting the Balearic Islands.

The large number of emergency calls, combined with flooding, falling trees, strong winds and dangerous conditions on roads, demonstrated how quickly torrential rainfall can create life-threatening situations, even in urban areas.

The storm also affected Ibiza and other islands, although Mallorca recorded by far the highest number of incidents during the Wednesday afternoon episode.
