Contemporary dance and Ibiza's natural heritage will come together this weekend as Benthos takes centre stage during the ninth edition of Las Noches del Patrimonio.

Created by choreographer, dancer and researcher Adrián Herrera, the production uses Posidonia oceanica as its starting point, translating the underwater ecosystem and its fragility into movement and contemporary performance.

The piece will premiere in Ibiza on Saturday, September 12, as part of a wider programme of free cultural activities across Dalt Vila.

A Dance Piece Inspired by Posidonia

Benthos explores the balance, degradation and recovery of Posidonia meadows through the language of the body.

Rather than presenting the seagrass simply as an environmental subject, the performance uses contemporary dance to explore the relationship between natural ecosystems and human activity.

The result connects Ibiza's natural heritage with contemporary artistic creation.

Premiere at the Town Hall Cloister

Benthos will be performed at the Claustre de l'Ajuntament in Dalt Vila on Saturday evening.

There will be two performances, at 9pm and 10pm, with each lasting approximately 20 minutes.

The performances are free and subject to available capacity.

Heritage Nights Returns to Ibiza

Las Noches del Patrimonio is taking place on September 11 and 12 across Spain's 15 World Heritage Cities.

In Ibiza, the programme is designed to encourage both residents and visitors to experience Dalt Vila from a different perspective, using historic spaces as settings for music, theatre, dance and other cultural activities.

The Ibiza programme includes 15 free activities organised around three main strands: Abierto Patrimonio, Vive Patrimonio and Escena Patrimonio.

Benthos forms part of Escena Patrimonio, which focuses specifically on bringing contemporary artistic creation into historic heritage spaces.

More Than Dance

The programme extends well beyond the main performance.

Historic spaces across Dalt Vila will open for special evening visits, including the Museum of Contemporary Art, the Puget Museum and the Madina Yabisa Interpretation Centre.

The Historical Archive of Ibiza and Formentera will also offer guided visits, giving visitors the opportunity to see historic documents including royal letters from Alfonso V.

Music and Theatre Across Dalt Vila

Vive Patrimonio will bring live music into several locations around the upper town.

Friday's programme includes a concert by Santi Pérez and Anikó Pusztai at Es Refectori, a saxophone ensemble at the Mirador de la Plaza d'Espanya and a jazz quartet performing in the Town Hall cloister.

There will also be dramatized historical tours recreating life inside the fortified city during the Renaissance period.

The combination allows visitors to experience Dalt Vila not simply as a historic monument, but as an active cultural setting.

A Living World Heritage Site

Ibiza's Culture and Heritage councillor Carmen Domínguez has highlighted the opportunity to experience the historic centre in a different way during the event.

The concept behind the programme is that heritage should not be treated solely as something preserved from the past, but as a living environment capable of generating new cultural experiences and creative work.

Benthos fits that idea particularly closely by connecting a UNESCO World Heritage setting with one of Ibiza's most important natural assets.

Posidonia at the Heart of the Performance

Posidonia oceanica is deeply connected to Ibiza's marine environment and has become one of the most recognisable symbols of the island's natural heritage.

By placing the seagrass ecosystem at the centre of a contemporary dance work, Benthos offers a different way of considering its importance.

The performance turns ecological processes into physical movement, allowing the audience to encounter the subject through art rather than through a conventional environmental presentation.

Two Nights of Culture in Dalt Vila

Alongside Benthos, six historic spaces will offer extended evening opening hours throughout the two-day programme.

The initiative forms part of a much larger national celebration involving more than 500 free cultural activities across Spain's 15 World Heritage Cities.

In Ibiza, the result is a programme that brings together history, architecture, music, theatre, contemporary art and environmental themes.

The ninth edition of Las Noches del Patrimonio offers a reminder that Ibiza's cultural identity extends far beyond its internationally recognised nightlife.

For two evenings, Dalt Vila will become a platform for artistic performances, guided visits and access to historic spaces after dark.
