Ibiza is set to become part of the practical training network of the newly recognised Universitat de Mallorca, following a new agreement between the university and Grupo Policlínica.

The agreement, signed in Ibiza on September 16, 2026, will allow future students of Medicine and other health-related degrees to complete part of their practical academic training on the island.

The collaboration is one of the first concrete steps in the university's plans to develop an inter-island presence across the Balearic Islands.

Training at Grupo Policlínica

The agreement between Universitat de Mallorca, operating through UMAC-ADEMA, and Grupo Policlínica establishes a framework for curricular external academic placements.

The placements will cover students in Medicine, Biomedicine, and Health and Biomedical Engineering.

Students will be able to undertake part of their practical training in a real healthcare environment, with the placements receiving academic recognition within their respective study programmes.

Each student will have an academic tutor appointed by the university and a second tutor designated by Grupo Policlínica.

The practical training is planned to take place within Grupo Policlínica's healthcare network, including the Policlínica Nuestra Señora del Rosario hospital in Ibiza.

A New Link Between University Education and Ibiza

The agreement forms part of UMAC's plans to give the Universitat de Mallorca a stronger inter-island dimension.

The university says the collaboration will allow future healthcare professionals to become familiar with Ibiza's healthcare environment during their education and potentially develop professional links with the island.

Grupo Policlínica has also presented the agreement as an opportunity to bring young talent into its healthcare environment and allow students to gain experience alongside established medical teams.

The University Is Still Developing Its New Degree Programmes

It is important to distinguish the new agreement from the current availability of university medical degrees.

The Universitat de Mallorca was legally recognised as a private university of the Balearic Islands system through Law 2/2026, approved on April 27 and published in the Official State Gazette in May. The law lists Medicine among the degrees initially planned by the university.

However, the law also establishes that the university must obtain the necessary quality assessments and administrative authorisations before individual programmes can be implemented.

UMAC has said that it has submitted 19 academic dossiers for new degree and master's programmes to the Agència de Qualitat Universitària de les Illes Balears (AQUIB).

The university expects its new programmes to be introduced progressively from the 2027/28 academic year, once the required evaluation, verification and authorisation procedures have been completed.

This means the Ibiza agreement establishes the framework for future practical placements rather than indicating that a full Medicine degree is already being taught on the island.

Plans to Attract and Retain Healthcare Professionals

The partnership also comes against the backdrop of the difficulties Ibiza faces in attracting and retaining healthcare professionals.

During a meeting with UMAC representatives, Consell d'Eivissa president Vicent Marí highlighted the island's challenges in maintaining a sufficient pool of healthcare professionals.

The possibility of students completing part of their training in Ibiza could allow future professionals to become familiar with the island's healthcare system before entering the workforce.

The university and Grupo Policlínica have also identified the potential for the relationship to expand beyond student placements into areas such as research, innovation and knowledge transfer.

Grupo Policlínica's Role

Grupo Policlínica has more than 50 years of activity and more than 700 professionals, according to information provided by the organisation.

Its healthcare network includes Policlínica Nuestra Señora del Rosario and Clínica Vila Parc, alongside other healthcare centres in Ibiza.

The new agreement provides a formal framework for the group to participate in the practical education of future health professionals.

UMAC Presents Its Strategic Plan in Ibiza

The agreement was signed during a wider institutional visit by representatives of the Universitat de Mallorca.

UMAC president Diego González and rector Pere Riutord also met with Consell d'Eivissa president Vicent Marí to present the university's Strategic Plan and discuss its plans for Ibiza.

The meeting included Miquel Costa, the Consell's director of Culture, Heritage and Education, and Grupo Policlínica director general David Medina.

The discussions covered potential future cooperation in university education, healthcare and professional training.

A €73 Million University Development Plan

The university's Strategic Plan includes an investment of approximately €73 million, with around half of that amount already invested in infrastructure for teaching, research and clinical activity, according to UMAC.

The institution also plans to provide more than €9 million in scholarships and study assistance over the next decade.

ADEMA has said it plans to introduce scholarships specifically aimed at students from Ibiza to help them access studies at the Universitat de Mallorca.

For Ibiza, the immediate significance of the agreement is the creation of a formal route for future UMAC students to undertake part of their practical healthcare education on the island.

The development of the university's Medicine and other health programmes will continue through the required evaluation, verification and authorisation processes.

If those programmes are approved and introduced as planned, the partnership with Grupo Policlínica will provide a local healthcare setting where students can gain practical experience as part of their university education.

The agreement therefore represents an early step in connecting Ibiza more closely with the development of the Universitat de Mallorca, rather than the launch of a medical school already operating on the island.
