Storm Warning Forces Changes to Ibiza's Día del Turista Celebrations

17 de September de 2026

An episode of heavy rain and thunderstorms has disrupted Ibiza's Día del Turista celebrations, with two municipalities already postponing their programmes as the island faces an orange weather warning.

The celebrations had been scheduled for Thursday, September 17, across several municipalities, with events designed to showcase Ibiza's culture, traditions, gastronomy and natural environment to visitors and residents.

Santa Eulària Postpones All Events

Santa Eulària des Riu was the first municipality to announce changes.

The town hall suspended all of its Día del Turista activities planned for September 17 after AEMET issued an orange warning for heavy rain and thunderstorms affecting Ibiza and Formentera.

The complete programme has been moved to Thursday, September 24.

The original programme included 11 activities distributed around Santa Eulària, Cala Llonga and Es Canar, including walking and cycling routes, nautical excursions, cultural visits, crafts, music and gastronomy.

Sant Antoni Also Changes Its Date

Sant Antoni de Portmany has subsequently announced that its Día del Turista celebration will also be postponed because of the weather warning.

The event originally scheduled for September 17 will now take place on Tuesday, September 22, with the same programme planned for the original date.

The Sant Antoni programme includes cultural visits, traditional crafts, children's activities, typical Ibiza dancing and an astronomical experience at Bibo Park. A maritime excursion along the north coast had also been scheduled.

AEMET Orange Warning Covers Ibiza and Formentera

AEMET has placed Ibiza and Formentera under an orange warning for rain and thunderstorms for Thursday, September 17.

The forecast for Ibiza includes periods of rain and a high probability of precipitation, with thunderstorms also possible. AEMET's municipal forecast for Ibiza currently shows periods of significant weather activity and strong gust potential associated with the episode.

The original warning forecast accumulated rainfall of up to 50 litres per square metre in one hour, with thunderstorms potentially accompanied by strong wind gusts and hail.

Outdoor and Maritime Activities Most Exposed

The weather presents a particular problem for Día del Turista because many of the planned activities were outdoors.

Walking routes, cultural events in open spaces, traditional performances and especially nautical activities are all dependent on suitable conditions.

This was one of the main reasons behind Santa Eulària's decision to cancel its September 17 programme completely rather than attempt to proceed with selected activities.

Sant Josep Programme Was Still Listed

Sant Josep de sa Talaia had planned its Día del Turista programme for September 17, with activities in Sant Agustí, Cala de Bou and Platja d'en Bossa.

The programme includes an exhibition about ball pagès, a traditional dance performance, a workshop on making Ibiza herbs and food tastings. A kayak excursion in Cala de Bou was also planned for the evening.

At the time of the latest local report checked, Sant Josep had not announced a general cancellation.

Because conditions can change quickly during an orange warning, visitors should check for a municipality announcement before attending any outdoor activity.

Sant Joan Also Had Events Planned

Sant Joan de Labritja scheduled its Día del Turista activities over September 17 and 19.

Thursday's programme includes simultaneous ball pagès performances at 7pm in Port de Sant Miquel and the Arenal Gran in Portinatx, both accompanied by traditional Ibiza sweets.

The programme was due to continue on Saturday, September 19, in Sant Vicent de sa Cala with the 28th Festival Folklòric d'Eivissa Mare Nostrum.

At the time of the latest report, no cancellation had been announced by Sant Joan.

A Week of Changing Plans

The postponements mean that the original September 17 Día del Turista calendar has already changed substantially.

Santa Eulària has moved its programme to September 24, while Sant Antoni has moved its celebration to September 22. Sant Josep and Sant Joan had, at the time of checking, not announced equivalent general postponements.

The situation highlights how strongly Ibiza's September events can depend on weather conditions, particularly when programmes include activities at sea and other outdoor events.

What Visitors Should Check

Anyone planning to attend one of the remaining Día del Turista activities should check the relevant town hall's latest announcement before travelling.

The weather situation is being monitored by AEMET, and additional cancellations or timetable changes remain possible while the orange warning is active.

For now, the confirmed changes are Santa Eulària's move to September 24 and Sant Antoni's move to September 22, with the status of programmes in Sant Josep and Sant Joan subject to further official announcements.
