Earthquake Recorded in the Mediterranean on Wednesday Morning as IGN Revises Initial Magnitude

07 de October de 2026

An earthquake was recorded in the Mediterranean on Wednesday morning, October 7, with the Instituto Geográfico Nacional (IGN) initially reporting a magnitude of 3.0.

The earthquake was registered at 06:34 UTC, corresponding to 08:34 local time in Spain. Initial information published by the IGN placed the event in the Mediterranean-Balearic area, with a provisional magnitude of 3.0 and a depth of approximately five kilometres.

However, the IGN's subsequently updated earthquake catalogue now gives different parameters for the event. The latest entry records the earthquake at 06:34:31 UTC, with coordinates of 40.8658°N and 1.9724°E, a depth of 16 kilometres and a magnitude of 2.2. The IGN currently classifies the location as “COSTERO CATALANA”, referring to the coastal Catalan area.

Initial Magnitude Was Revised

The change illustrates why the IGN's earthquake data should be treated as provisional immediately after a seismic event.

The initial information circulated on Wednesday morning gave a magnitude of 3.0 and a depth of five kilometres. Local reports at the time described the earthquake as occurring between Ibiza and Mallorca.

The IGN's latest published catalogue entry has since revised the event to magnitude 2.2 and places it considerably farther north, off the Catalan coast.

The IGN notes that information in its recent-earthquake catalogue is subject to modification as a result of continued seismic analysis.

No Confirmed Impact in Ibiza

There is currently no indication in the latest information that the earthquake caused damage in Ibiza or Formentera.

The initial local reports said the seismic network was still assessing where the tremor may have been felt most strongly.

Given the subsequent revision of the earthquake's location and magnitude, it would be premature to describe it as an earthquake specifically affecting Ibiza.

Another Recent Earthquake in the Western Mediterranean

The latest event comes only days after another earthquake was recorded in the western Mediterranean.

On October 3, the IGN recorded a magnitude 3.2 earthquake at 19:36 local time in the area classified as “COSTERO CATALANA”, at coordinates 40.8323°N and 1.5458°E. The IGN catalogue currently gives that event a depth of zero kilometres.

The two events should not automatically be described as part of the same seismic sequence, as there is currently no evidence presented by the IGN establishing such a connection.

What the Latest IGN Data Shows

Date: Wednesday, October 7, 2026
Time: 08:34 local time
Latest recorded magnitude: 2.2
Depth: 16 kilometres
Location: 40.8658°N, 1.9724°E
IGN classification: Coastal Catalonia
Initial reported magnitude: 3.0
Initial reported depth: 5 kilometres

For readers in Ibiza and Formentera, the key point is that the earthquake was initially reported using provisional parameters that were subsequently revised. The latest IGN catalogue should therefore be used when describing the event, rather than the initial 3.0-magnitude calculation.
