Formentera is celebrating a decade of Qué Celeste this September, with the festival bringing together live music, circus, creative arts, workshops and environmental activities for its 10th edition.

The main programme takes place at the Espai Cultural de Sant Ferran on Friday, September 18 and Saturday, September 19, with activities beginning in the afternoon and continuing into the evening.

Ten years of culture and environmental awareness

Qué Celeste has built its identity around combining cultural programming with environmental awareness and community participation.

The 2026 edition continues that approach with a programme that brings together music, performing arts, workshops, local creativity, recycled materials and activities focused on the natural environment of Formentera.

The anniversary is also reflected in the festival's visual identity, with this year's commemorative artwork created by Formentera-based artist Azahara Jiménez.

Friday brings Brazilian and Caribbean sounds

The Friday programme begins at 17:30 with workshops and participatory activities, including recycled games, a forró dance workshop, recycling activities with PlayWild 500, bicycle repairs and artistic video projections.

A market featuring local artists and creators opens during the afternoon, while an environmental talk from the University of the Balearic Islands is also scheduled.

At 20:30, the programme moves into circus and performance with “Qué Pacha-Mama” and Duo Lollypop.

Live music begins at 22:00 with Forró do Pulpo, followed by Band’Ayan and Marina y su Melao, bringing Brazilian, Caribbean and Latin American influences to the stage.

Saturday continues with music and workshops

The festival returns on Saturday afternoon with more workshops, recycled games, contact improvisation, PlayWild 500 activities and video art.

The GOB Formentera will lead the environmental programme, while Clownomadas will bring clown, magic, circus and theatre together at 20:30.

The Saturday night music programme begins at 22:00 with Mawi, whose performance combines flamenco singing and dance.

He will be followed by FRAC, blending rap, Cádiz carnival, electronic music and humour, before Formentera batucada group Bloco Colubraria takes the stage.

The evening continues with Uruguayan band Cuatro Pesos de Propina, whose music combines ska, rock and reggae, before Brazilian percussionist JapaSystem closes the programme with a performance incorporating electronic elements.

Environmental activities are at the heart of the festival

The Qué Celeste programme goes beyond the main concerts.

Environmental activities began on September 12 with a beach clean-up at s'Estufador and continue through the month with opportunities to learn more about marine ecosystems, Posidonia and biodiversity.

On September 18, the UIB's Coastal Health Monitoring Scheme will bring members of the public into a scientific activity focused on studying the health of the Balearic coastal environment.

Saturday, September 19 will also feature activities focused on Posidonia and observations of marine life around Formentera.

Recycling becomes an art form

The festival's environmental message also extends into art.

On Sunday, September 20, Centre Antoni Tur “Gabrielet” in Sant Francesc will host the second meeting and exhibition dedicated to artists and craftspeople working with recycled and recovered materials.

The exhibition brings together 14 artists from the Balearic Islands, including creators from Formentera, Mallorca, Menorca and Ibiza.

Their work uses materials including plastics recovered from beaches, recycled glass, old candles and fishing nets, transforming discarded materials into new artistic and craft pieces.

The exhibition opens at 20:00 and is scheduled to remain on display until September 27.

A festival that continues beyond the weekend

Although the main celebration is concentrated around September 18 and 19, the wider Qué Celeste programme continues into the following week.

The environmental programme will conclude on Saturday, September 26 with the creation of a butterfly garden at the Espai Cultural de Sant Ferran.

The activity forms part of the “Butterflies for Biodiversity” initiative and is designed to support local butterflies and other pollinators through the planting of aromatic and nectar-rich plants.
