AEMET Warns of Possible DANA, Heavy Rain and Cooler Temperatures in Ibiza This Weekend

October 15, 2026

Ibiza and Formentera are forecast to experience a significant change in weather this weekend, with potentially heavy rainfall and falling temperatures as a possible DANA brings increased instability to the Balearic Islands.

Spain’s State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) issued an information notice on Wednesday, 14 October, warning that the weather could turn more unsettled from Saturday, 17 October. The risk of intense and persistent rain is expected to increase during Saturday afternoon and continue into Sunday, 18 October, although uncertainty remains over the precise location and severity of the heaviest rainfall.

The forecast follows several days of unusually warm and stable weather for mid-October. The incoming system is expected to bring conditions closer to seasonal norms, with cooler temperatures and a greater chance of rain across the Mediterranean region.

What Is a DANA and How Could It Affect Ibiza?

DANA is the Spanish abbreviation for an isolated depression at high atmospheric levels. These systems can increase atmospheric instability and, when combined with moist air and favourable wind patterns, can produce heavy and persistent rainfall.

According to AEMET, a trough extending over the Iberian Peninsula and the possible isolation of a DANA to its north are expected to increase instability, particularly around the Mediterranean.

A flow of moist air towards coastal areas could help intensify rainfall across parts of the Balearic Islands. However, the agency has stressed that the system’s eventual position and the winds at lower levels of the atmosphere will influence where the heaviest rain develops.

This uncertainty means the forecast should be treated as an evolving weather situation rather than a guarantee that the entire island will experience the same conditions.

Saturday, October 17: Rain Could Increase During the Afternoon

Saturday is expected to mark the beginning of the more unsettled period.

A frontal system will affect northern Spain, while showers and thunderstorms could develop in parts of the interior. During the second half of the day, rainfall is expected to become more widespread and intensify across the Balearic Islands and the Mediterranean coast.

For Ibiza, AEMET’s municipal forecast indicates a maximum temperature of around 26°C, although conditions are expected to become increasingly unsettled later in the day.

Anyone planning outdoor activities, coastal excursions or travel around the island should check the latest forecast before setting off, particularly if plans extend into Saturday evening.

Sunday, October 18: Greater Concern Over Persistent Rain

Sunday is currently expected to be the more unsettled day for the Balearic Islands.

AEMET identifies the Mediterranean coast and the Balearics among the areas with the greatest likelihood of significant rainfall during the episode. Showers could be intense and persistent, potentially producing substantial accumulated rainfall.

If heavy rain persists over the same areas, localised flooding and rapidly rising water levels in drainage channels or streams could become concerns. These are potential impacts identified in the meteorological outlook, not confirmation that flooding will occur in Ibiza.

The maximum temperature forecast for Ibiza Town is around 23°C on Sunday, several degrees below the levels expected earlier in the weekend.

Temperatures Set to Fall After an Unusually Warm Spell

Alongside the rainfall risk, the arrival of colder air is expected to bring a general decrease in temperatures.

AEMET says the incoming air mass should help bring temperatures closer to normal for the time of year after a period of unusually warm conditions.

For Ibiza Town, the current forecast suggests maximum temperatures falling from around 26°C on Friday and Saturday to approximately 23°C on Sunday and 22°C on Monday. These figures are forecasts and may change as the weather system develops.

The change is expected to feel more autumnal, particularly during rainy periods and after sunset, although local conditions will depend on cloud cover, rainfall and wind.

Will Ibiza Be Under an Official Weather Alert?

AEMET’s current information note warns of the potential for intense rain, but the available information does not confirm a specific orange or red warning for Ibiza and Formentera.

The final impact will depend on the DANA’s trajectory and the distribution of rainfall. Official warnings can be updated as the forecast becomes more precise, so residents and visitors should consult the latest AEMET forecasts and weather warnings before making plans.

Extra care is sensible around areas prone to water accumulation during heavy rain, and outdoor plans should be reconsidered if conditions deteriorate.

Weekend Weather Outlook for Ibiza

  • Friday, 16 October: Maximum temperature around 26°C, with generally more stable conditions than expected later in the weekend.

  • Saturday, 17 October: Maximum around 26°C. Rain and showers may become more widespread during the afternoon and evening.

  • Sunday, 18 October: Maximum around 23°C. A greater risk of intense or persistent rain, with potentially significant accumulated rainfall.

  • Monday, 19 October: Maximum around 22°C, with unsettled conditions potentially continuing.

These temperatures and conditions are based on the current municipal forecast and may change as updated information becomes available.

The developing weather system is expected to bring a clear change from Ibiza’s recent warm conditions. Heavy rainfall remains a possibility rather than a certainty at any specific location, making updated forecasts and official warnings particularly important as the weekend approaches.
