Institut d’Estudis Eivissencs Presents Volunteer Programme to Help People Practise Catalan in Ibiza

October 14, 2026

The Institut d’Estudis Eivissencs (IEE) will present its Voluntariat Lingüístic programme on Wednesday, 14 October, offering people who are learning Catalan more opportunities to practise speaking the language in everyday life.

The presentation will take place at 19:00 at the institute’s headquarters at Via Púnica, 29, in Ibiza Town. The initiative connects people who regularly speak Catalan with those who want to improve their oral expression through conversation in a relaxed and welcoming environment.

Coordinated by Eva Tur and Fanny Planells, the programme aims to help participants gain confidence, overcome the fear of making mistakes and become more comfortable using Catalan in their daily lives.

Learning Catalan Through Conversation

The Voluntariat Lingüístic programme is based on the idea that learning a language involves more than studying grammar and vocabulary. Regular conversation gives learners the opportunity to put their knowledge into practice, develop fluency and use Catalan more naturally.

Participants are paired according to their availability and interests, allowing them to arrange meetings that suit both people. Conversations can cover everyday topics and provide an opportunity to share experiences while practising the language.

The initiative is not a formal Catalan course and does not replace classroom learning. Instead, it offers an additional way to develop speaking skills and build confidence outside a traditional educational setting.

Volunteers Play an Important Role

The programme also recognises the contribution of Catalan speakers who volunteer their time to help others practise the language.

By taking part, volunteers help create opportunities for learners to use Catalan in real-life situations, including social conversations and everyday interactions. The aim is to make speaking the language feel more accessible and natural.

The initiative also encourages contact between people from different cultural and linguistic backgrounds, using conversation as a way to build relationships and strengthen community life in Ibiza.

A Continuing Initiative in Ibiza

The Institut d’Estudis Eivissencs has longstanding experience organising linguistic pairs on the island. Its work includes coordinating participants and supporting the programme, which has previously been developed in collaboration with Ibiza Town Council.

The Voluntariat Lingüístic runs alongside formal Catalan classes, providing another option for people who already have some knowledge of the language and want to become more confident speaking it.
