Students at IES Sant Agustí have created a new urban art mural celebrating words, expressions and cultural references from Ibiza as part of the eighth edition of the “Units pel nostre parlar” programme organised by Sant Josep Town Hall.

The mural was presented this week following a collaborative project involving students and teachers from the school’s Visual Arts and Catalan Language departments.

The initiative forms part of a wider programme dedicated to promoting knowledge and preservation of Ibiza’s linguistic and cultural heritage. The 2026 edition runs from September 4 to 22 and includes more than 20 activities involving language, culture, traditions, music, literature, heritage and art.

A Week of Urban Art at the School

The IES Sant Agustí project involved the entire school over the course of a week.

Students worked with different urban art techniques to create the mural, using words from the island’s traditional speech as an integral part of the design.

Rather than simply writing the words onto the wall, the students used them as visual elements and tools for creating the artwork, employing templates and different typographies.

The project was the first time IES Sant Agustí had participated in the “Units pel nostre parlar” programme.

Traditional Ibiza Words Take Centre Stage

The vocabulary included in the mural was selected from contributions by teachers and students from different year groups.

Some of the expressions are less commonly used today, with examples including “sipar” and “bogamarí”.

The project therefore gives students an opportunity to explore vocabulary connected with the island while also bringing traditional expressions into a contemporary school setting.

The municipal programme describes this work as part of its broader aim of preserving Ibiza’s linguistic heritage and bringing it closer to younger generations.

Tànit and Sant Agustí Among the Images

The mural also incorporates visual references connected with Ibiza’s heritage and landscape.

Among the elements selected by the students are the goddess Tànit and the church of Sant Agustí.

These references complement the linguistic elements of the artwork and connect the project with other aspects of Ibiza’s cultural identity.

A Second Artwork Represents the Island

The project also includes a second mural painted on wood.

This piece represents the silhouette of the island of Ibiza while following the same creative concept as the main mural.

Together, the two artworks combine language, visual art and references to the island's heritage.

Part of a Wider Cultural Programme

“Units pel nostre parlar” is a project of Sant Josep Town Hall designed to promote knowledge of Ibiza’s linguistic and cultural heritage and encourage interaction between different groups and generations around that heritage.

The 2026 programme includes more than 20 activities across the municipality, covering areas such as music, cinema, poetry, literature, heritage, excursions, workshops, exhibitions and audiovisual projects.

The programme also includes a performance of Marià Villangómez’s “Ball pagès”, music events, a traditional “cantada d’estribots” in Sant Agustí, and other activities linked to Ibiza’s language and culture.

Bringing Ibiza’s Heritage to Younger Generations

The mural at IES Sant Agustí is intended to bring traditional language into a space used by young people every day.

By combining familiar urban art techniques with words and cultural references from Ibiza, the project offers students a practical way to explore and preserve elements of the island’s heritage.

For Sant Josep Town Hall, initiatives such as this are intended to help ensure that local language, traditions and cultural knowledge continue to reach younger generations.

The “Units pel nostre parlar” programme continues across Sant Josep until September 22, with activities taking place throughout the municipality.
