Neus Massanet has officially taken her seat in the Spanish Senate representing Ibiza and Formentera, using her first parliamentary intervention to demand stronger Maritime Rescue resources for Formentera.

Massanet participated in her first Senate session on Tuesday, September 8, where she formally took office and immediately raised concerns about the demands being placed on emergency maritime services around the smaller Pityusic island.

Her intervention came at a particularly significant moment for Formentera, following months of increased activity linked to irregular migration arrivals and a series of maritime emergencies.

Massanet Replaces Juanjo Ferrer

Massanet takes over the Senate seat previously held by Juanjo Ferrer.

The change was agreed as part of the arrangement between the progressive parties that shared the Ibiza and Formentera Senate candidacy during the current XV Legislature.

The Spanish Senate officially records Massanet as an elected senator for the Ibiza-Formentera constituency, with her mandate beginning in July 2026. She replaced Juanjo Ferrer for the final part of the current legislature.

This is also expected to be the final legislature in which Ibiza and Formentera share a Senate seat, following the constitutional reform that will give Formentera its own representation in future general elections.

Her First Intervention Focuses on Formentera

Massanet used her first intervention in the Senate to ask Transport Minister Óscar Puente about Maritime Rescue operations in Formentera during 2026.

The question was formally registered as a request for the government's assessment of Maritime Rescue interventions on the island.

Her focus was particularly on whether the current resources are sufficient for the specific circumstances faced by Formentera.

Transport Minister Óscar Puente responded that, in the government's assessment, existing Maritime Rescue resources are sufficient to respond to rescue operations in Formentera.

Puente said all migrant boats detected in Balearic waters had been attended to.

He highlighted the permanent Maritime Rescue deployment based at Ibiza port, together with additional resources based at La Savina in Formentera.

The minister also stressed the government's willingness to adapt Maritime Rescue capacity when necessary, particularly to respond to humanitarian and environmental emergencies.

Six Maritime Rescue Incidents This Summer

Puente's response came against a backdrop of six Maritime Rescue incidents recorded around Formentera during summer 2026, according to the government figures cited during the Senate debate.

The number demonstrates the level of activity facing the service during the busiest months of the year.

These incidents are not all necessarily related to irregular migration. Maritime Rescue services also respond to other emergencies at sea, including incidents involving recreational vessels and other maritime users.

The government says Formentera is not without dedicated Maritime Rescue resources.

A permanent operational device is based at Ibiza port, while additional resources are stationed at La Savina.
