Ibiza and Formentera to Select Members for 173 Polling Stations Ahead of 29 November Elections

02 November 2026

The selection process for the people who will staff polling stations in Ibiza and Formentera has begun, with local authorities required to complete public draws by 4 November ahead of Spain's general elections on Sunday, 29 November 2026.

A total of 173 polling stations are planned across the Pitiusas. Ibiza will have 163, distributed across 39 polling locations, while Formentera will have 10 stations in three locations.

The selection process began on 31 October and is being carried out by Ibiza's five town councils and the Consell Insular de Formentera.

How the 173 Polling Stations Are Distributed

Ibiza Town will have the largest number of polling stations, with 52, followed by Santa Eulària with 42.

The distribution across the islands is:

Municipality Polling stations
Ibiza Town 52
Santa Eulària des Riu 42
Sant Antoni de Portmany 31
Sant Josep de sa Talaia 31
Sant Joan de Labritja 7
Total Ibiza 163
Formentera 10
Total Pitiusas 173

On Ibiza, the 163 stations will be located across 39 polling venues. Formentera's 10 stations will be distributed between three venues in Sant Francesc, Sant Ferran and El Pilar de la Mola.

How Members of Polling Stations Are Selected

Each polling station is made up of a president and two vocal members. For each position, two substitutes are also appointed.

This means nine people are selected for every station: three main members and six substitutes. Across the 173 stations in Ibiza and Formentera, this represents approximately 1,557 appointments.

The selections are made through public, random draws organised by the relevant local authorities. Those chosen must be registered voters in the electoral section concerned, be able to read and write and be under 70 years old. People aged 65 or over can decline the appointment within seven days of receiving notification.

The person selected as president must also meet the required educational qualification, which includes a Bachillerato or second-level vocational training qualification, or an equivalent qualification where applicable.

Notifications and the Right to Request Exemption

People selected for a polling station should receive official notification within three days of the draw, together with an instruction manual explaining their responsibilities.

Serving as a polling-station member is compulsory. However, anyone with a justified and documented reason preventing them from fulfilling the role can submit an exemption request to the relevant Electoral Zone Board within seven days of receiving notification.

The board assesses the circumstances and decides whether the request is accepted. Being selected does not automatically mean that a person will have to serve if a valid exemption is granted.

How Much Polling Station Members Will Receive

Presidents and vocal members who carry out their duties will receive an allowance of €75 under the current national regulation.

Substitutes receive the allowance if they are required to replace one of the main members and perform the role.

Employees and public servants appointed to polling stations are also entitled to paid leave for election day if it is a working day, as well as a reduction of five working hours on the following day.

What Happens on Election Day?

The selected members and their substitutes must report to their designated polling location at 08:00 on Sunday, 29 November, to prepare for the opening of the polling station.

Voting is scheduled to run from 09:00 to 20:00. Once the station has been properly constituted, substitutes who are not needed may leave.

Failure to attend without a legitimate reason, or abandoning assigned duties without justification, can carry criminal penalties under Spain's General Electoral System Law. These include imprisonment of three months to one year or a fine of six to 24 months.

With the public draws taking place until 4 November, selected residents across Ibiza and Formentera will receive their notifications in the days following the respective appointments, giving them time to review their obligations and, where justified, request exemption.
