Discover the Life and Work of Picarol

Born in Ibiza in 1876, Josep Costa Ferrer developed a multifaceted career that extended well beyond drawing and caricature.

Known professionally as Picarol, he became involved in several important satirical publications of his time, including La Campana de Gràcia and L'Esquella de la Torratxa, contributing illustrations that reflected the social and political atmosphere of the period.

His professional activities also extended into cultural promotion, publishing, antiques and business initiatives. Among his projects were the founding of Galeries Costa in Palma and the development of tourism-related initiatives in the Balearic Islands.

The retrospective aims to present the different dimensions of his career and highlight his contribution to the cultural history of Ibiza.

66 Works and More Than 40 Historical Documents

The exhibition brings together 66 works, most of which come from the private collection of documentary researcher Carles Prats Puyalto, who also co-curated the exhibition alongside philologist Joan-Albert Ribas.

More than 40 historical documents complement the artistic collection, including posters, architectural plans, maps, books and illustrations published in satirical magazines.

Together, these materials offer visitors a broader understanding of Picarol's professional life, showing how his interests extended across artistic creation, cultural initiatives and entrepreneurship.

The exhibition also explores his connection with Mallorca, particularly through his involvement in the development of Cala d'Or, a project that will receive further attention during the accompanying lecture programme.

Final Conference on Cala d'Or Scheduled for 13 November

Alongside the exhibition, the Consell Insular d'Eivissa and the Institut d'Estudis Eivissencs have organised three public conferences dedicated to different aspects of Picarol's life and work.
