Santa Eulària Details Social Services Support Offered to Homeless Woman Detained After Jesús Cultural Centre Damage

02 November 2026

Santa Eulària Town Council has provided further details about the support offered to a homeless woman who was detained after damage was caused to the Centre Cultural de Jesús on Thursday, 29 October 2026.

The woman had been sleeping near the municipal building after losing the vehicle she had been using as a home. The incident took place shortly before the Ibiza and Formentera Architecture Awards were due to be held at the venue.

Following the damage, the Local Police of Santa Eulària detained her. The Council has since explained the steps taken by its Social Services department over the previous month, including several appointments, visits by social workers and an offer of temporary accommodation.

Six Appointments Arranged by Social Services

According to information provided by the municipality, Social Services arranged six appointments with the woman after her housing situation became known.

Two meetings took place at municipal offices. On two other occasions, social workers visited her where she was staying, an arrangement the Council describes as an exceptional measure outside its usual procedure.

The woman did not attend the other two scheduled appointments.

The municipality says that during this period it offered her access to available assistance, including temporary accommodation, which she declined. She is currently on the waiting list for Sa Joveria, the municipality's reception centre.

The Council has not provided further details about the conditions of the accommodation offered or the reasons for her decision.

What Happened Before the Damage at the Cultural Centre?

The incident occurred on Thursday afternoon, when the Centre Cultural de Jesús was preparing to host the Ibiza and Formentera Architecture Awards.

The Council says the woman had been keeping various belongings near the building and that Local Police officers had asked her on several occasions to remove them.

With the event due to take place and the objects still in the area, the cleaning company removed some of the items she had been using to sleep there.

The municipality has specifically clarified that the trolley in which she kept her personal belongings was not removed. It also says it does not have sufficient information to establish a direct link between the cleaning operation and the subsequent damage.

The earlier report of the incident described damage to spherical lamps at the entrance, waste bins, hanging light fittings, glass panels and a stained-glass window. The full cost of repairs has not yet been determined.

Her Vehicle Remains a Separate Issue

Before the incident, the woman had been living in a car with her two dogs. The vehicle was removed after it was found not to have the compulsory insurance required to circulate.

According to the Council, recovering the vehicle was one of the main requests she raised during her meetings with Social Services. The municipality says it cannot meet that request under the current circumstances because the car does not have the necessary legal authorisation to circulate.

Her loss of the vehicle had left her without the accommodation she had been using, and she has continued to lack stable housing.

Two Dogs Taken to Natura Parc

The situation of the woman's two dogs was also addressed following her detention.

The animals were transferred to Natura Parc, where they are being cared for. The Council says they are in good condition and that she will be able to collect them once she is released from police custody.

Cost of Repairs Still Being Assessed

The municipality's technical services are evaluating the damage to the Centre Cultural de Jesús and the cost of the necessary repairs.

No official figure has yet been released, and the Council has not confirmed whether it will seek compensation from the woman.

The incident has brought renewed attention to the challenges of responding to homelessness in the municipality, particularly where people are living without stable accommodation and require support from several public services.

The woman's detention does not, in itself, establish criminal liability. Any legal consequences will depend on the subsequent proceedings and their outcome.
