Residents and small businesses in Ibiza Town have another opportunity to benefit from locally generated solar energy through the shared self-consumption project at Cas Serres. Applications are open until 9 November 2026, with the initiative offering access to renewable electricity without installing solar panels or making an upfront investment.
Promoted by the Institut Balear de l'Energia (IBE) and Ibiza Town Council, the scheme allows eligible households and businesses to use energy produced by a public photovoltaic installation located on the roof of the Cas Serres car park.
Participants pay an annual fee of €100 per assigned kilowatt (kW). According to the authorities' estimates, this could generate savings of up to €300 a year on the electricity bill, leaving up to €200 in net savings after the annual fee.
The actual amount saved will depend on each participant's electricity consumption and supply conditions.
A 100 kW Solar Installation for Ibiza Residents
The photovoltaic installation at Cas Serres has a total capacity of 100 kW.
Of this, 30 kW is allocated to Ibiza Town Council, while the remaining 70 kW is reserved for households and small businesses. The project has the capacity to accommodate up to 49 homes and seven businesses.
The scheme is designed to make solar energy accessible to people who may not have suitable roofs for their own panels, live in apartment buildings or rent their homes.
Instead of installing individual equipment, participants benefit from electricity generated by the shared public installation.
How Much Can Participants Save?
The annual participation fee is €100 for each assigned kW.
Households are allocated 1 kW, meaning an annual fee of €100. Businesses can access 3 kW for an annual fee of €300, while smaller establishments with lower electricity consumption may request 1 kW.
The estimated savings are up to €300 per year for each assigned kW. After deducting the annual participation fee, this could mean net savings of up to €200 per year for a household with a 1 kW allocation.
These figures are estimates rather than guaranteed reductions. Actual savings will depend on electricity consumption and the conditions of each supply contract.
The energy is distributed through the conventional electricity grid, with the corresponding benefit reflected automatically on participants' electricity bills through surplus compensation. Participants do not need to change electricity suppliers or pay for installation and maintenance.
Who Can Participate?
The project is open to holders of electricity supply contracts whose electricity meters are located within a maximum radius of five kilometres from the Cas Serres installation.
This geographical requirement means that eligible households and businesses across several parts of Ibiza Town may be able to participate.
The allocation arrangements are:
-
Households: 1 kW, with an annual fee of €100.
-
Businesses: 3 kW, with an annual fee of €300.
-
Small businesses with low consumption: The option to request 1 kW.
Households experiencing financial vulnerability will receive priority. Other applications will be considered according to the order in which complete and correctly submitted documentation is received.
How to Apply Before 9 November
The application deadline is Monday, 9 November 2026.
Interested residents and businesses can consult the participation conditions and application documentation through the Institut Balear de l'Energia or at the Balearic Government's Energy Transition Offices.
The documentation required includes:
-
The application to join the shared self-consumption scheme.
-
Identification of the electricity supply contract holder.
-
A recent electricity bill.
-
The cadastral reference of the property.
-
The documentation required to arrange direct debit of the annual fee.
Additional documents may be required depending on whether the applicant is an individual or a business. Households seeking priority on vulnerability grounds must also provide the relevant supporting documentation.
A Step Towards More Accessible Renewable Energy in Ibiza
The Cas Serres project is an example of how public infrastructure can help make renewable energy more accessible to local communities.
By using an existing public car park for solar generation, the initiative offers an alternative to individual rooftop installations and allows households and small businesses to benefit from locally produced electricity.
It is particularly relevant for residents who cannot install their own photovoltaic panels because of the type of property they live in, a lack of suitable roof space or the costs involved.
With the application deadline approaching, eligible residents and small businesses have until 9 November to explore the conditions and find out whether they can join the shared solar energy scheme.
