The Santa Eulària Town Council has coordinated the removal of more than five tonnes of rubbish and abandoned belongings from a former settlement in the Cala Mestella area, in an operation intended to reduce environmental risks and discourage new occupations of the site.
The clean-up took place on privately owned land that was unoccupied at the time of the intervention but still contained substantial quantities of waste left behind from previous occupations.
The operation was directed by officers from the Local Police's Preventive Action Group (GAP), with the Council arranging for a specialist company to carry out the removal.
Abandoned Belongings Removed from the Plot
The materials collected included bicycles, household appliances, mattresses, tables, suitcases, frying pans and other discarded objects scattered across the land.
According to the Council, the accumulation of rubbish presented potential environmental hazards, including the risk of fire and possible soil contamination.
More than five tonnes of waste were removed during the operation. The municipality has not published a detailed breakdown of the materials collected.
Property Owner to Pay for the Clean-Up
Because the land is privately owned, the Local Police's GAP officers first issued a formal request to the property owner to arrange for the plot to be cleaned.
After contacting the owner, the Council says the property holder agreed to assume the costs of the intervention. The municipality subsequently contracted a specialist company to carry out the work, with the bill to be paid by the owner.
The Council has not disclosed the final cost of the operation.
Measures to Prevent Further Settlements
The intervention forms part of the municipality's ongoing monitoring of locations where settlements have existed in the past.
The Council says it intends to address abandoned plots where accumulated rubbish and neglected conditions could encourage the return of settlements. The aim is to prevent former sites from becoming occupied again and to reduce the environmental problems associated with abandoned waste.
The municipality has not announced a new security installation or a permanent surveillance operation specifically for the Cala Mestella plot. The confirmed action in this case was the clean-up, coordinated by the Local Police and funded by the private owner.
