Around 15 volunteers removed more than 300 kilos of marine waste from the coastline between Es Cubells and Cala de Ses Boques in Sant Josep de sa Talaia during a community clean-up on Saturday, September 19.

The four-hour operation brought together local residents and volunteers who used kayaks, paddle boards and walking routes to reach sections of coastline that are difficult to access by land.

Four Hours of Coastal Clean-Up

The volunteers worked across different points between Es Cubells beach and Ses Boques, collecting waste from both the shoreline and the sea.

The area is bordered by cliffs and has limited access for vehicles, making conventional waste collection difficult. Participants therefore used small craft and reached some sections on foot, including areas accessed with water shoes.

More than 300 kilos of material were collected during the four-hour operation.

Boat Debris Among the Finds

A significant part of the waste consisted of larger objects associated with maritime activity.

Volunteers recovered items including boat components, pieces of fibreglass, rudders, masts, aluminium structures, fenders and cushions.

Several drums and other bulky objects were also removed from the coastline.

Fishing Gear and Ropes Recovered

The clean-up also uncovered a considerable amount of discarded fishing equipment.

Among the material collected were nets, thick ropes, fishing gear and navigation or signalling markers.

Agricultural plastic boxes and sacks were also found among the debris.

Everyday Plastic Waste Along the Coast

Alongside the larger maritime items, volunteers collected more conventional litter.

The material included plastic bottles, cans, bags, bottle caps, food wrappers and plastic film.

The mixture of large marine debris and everyday rubbish illustrates the variety of material that can accumulate along exposed sections of Ibiza's coastline.

A Difficult Area to Reach

The coastline between Es Cubells and Ses Boques can be particularly challenging to clean because of its geography.

Cliffs limit road access, while wind and sea currents can bring floating debris towards the shore.

The difficulty of reaching these areas means community clean-ups can provide access to places that are not easily served by conventional collection vehicles.

Community Participation

The clean-up was organised through the Guardianes de la Mar project with the involvement of the Association of Es Cubells.

Local businesses including Bar Es Llumbí and Chiringuito Ses Boques supported the initiative and helped provide resources for the volunteers.

Participants described the experience as a community effort to care for the coastline they use and live alongside.

Support From Sant Josep Town Hall

Sant Josep de sa Talaia Town Hall provided the materials required for the activity, including gloves, reusable bags and rubbish sacks.

The municipality also coordinated the subsequent collection and management of the more than 300 kilos of waste removed from the coast.

The public-private-community cooperation allowed the collected material to be removed after the volunteers completed their work.

Clean-Up Ahead of World Cleanup Day

The activity took place one day before World Cleanup Day on Sunday, September 20.

World Cleanup Day is officially observed on September 20 each year, following a United Nations General Assembly resolution establishing the date.

The Es Cubells initiative formed part of a weekend in which communities in Ibiza and elsewhere took practical action to remove waste from local environments.

The material ranged from boat and fishing equipment to everyday plastics and packaging, highlighting the different sources of waste that can accumulate along the shore.

For the volunteers involved, the operation was also an opportunity to work together locally and leave the coastal area in better condition.
