Lidl Cuts Shopping Basket Cost by 8% With Permanent Price Reductions on 800 Products

19 September 2026

Lidl says it has reduced the overall cost of its shopping basket in Spain by 8% so far in 2026, after permanently lowering the prices of around 800 products across its range.

The supermarket chain announced the figures on August 27, saying the reduction was based on data from Worldpanel by Numerator. The price cuts apply to products across practically all categories and are being maintained below the prices recorded at the beginning of the year.

Around 800 products now cost less

According to Lidl, around 800 products currently have prices below those recorded at the start of 2026.

The reductions cover a broad range of products, including personal hygiene, household cleaning, pantry items and fresh food.

Fresh produce is particularly represented, with reductions affecting fruit, vegetables, meat and fish.

The company describes these as permanent price reductions rather than temporary promotional discounts.

The 8% figure applies to the overall basket

The headline 8% reduction needs some context.

Lidl is not saying that every product in its stores is now 8% cheaper.

Instead, the company says the overall cost of its shopping basket has fallen by 8% in 2026, according to Worldpanel by Numerator, following multiple price reductions during the year.

Individual products have experienced different reductions, meaning the actual saving for a particular household will depend on what it buys.

Some everyday products have seen larger reductions

Lidl says some of the permanent reductions are considerably larger than 8%.

The company cites reductions of more than 20% for products including frozen hake sticks and lentils.

Other frequently purchased products, including long-grain rice, green beans and chopped onion, have seen reductions of more than 15%.

These figures refer to the specific products mentioned by Lidl and should not be interpreted as applying to every item within those categories.

Price reductions cover almost every category

The strategy extends beyond food.

Lidl says its permanent reductions cover practically all product categories, including:

  • Personal hygiene and personal care

  • Household cleaning products

  • Pantry and cupboard staples

  • Fruit and vegetables

  • Meat

  • Fish

The permanent reductions are being used alongside Lidl's normal weekly promotions.

Weekly promotions are continuing

The new permanent reductions do not replace Lidl's regular promotional offers.

The company says its weekly promotions will continue, meaning shoppers can still find temporary discounts in addition to products whose base prices have been permanently reduced.

Lidl says the purpose of the strategy is to make savings less dependent on short-term promotions.

Lidl says the reductions are being absorbed through its margins

The company attributes the reductions to its commercial model, including aggregated purchasing and operational efficiencies.

Lidl says the financial effort associated with the permanent reductions is being absorbed through adjustments to its operating margins rather than by reducing supplier margins.

This is a statement from Lidl about how it is funding the price reductions.

The announcement comes as food prices remain under pressure

The move comes while food prices in Spain remain above their levels of a year earlier.

Lidl cited the latest available INE figures at the time of its announcement, which showed food and non-alcoholic beverages rising 1.6% year-on-year in July 2026.

Other supermarket chains have also been increasing their focus on promotions, private-label products and pricing as consumers remain sensitive to the cost of their weekly shopping.

Lidl is also gaining customers

The company says Worldpanel by Numerator recorded an increase of 1.5 million Lidl customers in the second quarter of 2026 compared with the previous quarter.

Worldpanel's wider analysis also showed Lidl among the supermarket chains gaining market share during the first eight months of 2026, alongside DIA and Consum.

That wider market data is separate from the 8% basket-cost figure.

A new savings campaign is also planned

Lidl says it will launch a campaign called “Récord del ahorro” in the coming weeks to highlight the savings available across its stores.

The campaign comes on top of the permanent price reductions already introduced during 2026.

What the changes mean for shoppers

The main change is that Lidl is combining two different approaches to pricing.

Some products have received permanent price reductions compared with their prices at the beginning of 2026, while weekly promotions continue to offer additional temporary discounts.

The company's reported 8% reduction is therefore an overall basket measure rather than a universal reduction applied to every item.

For shoppers, the actual saving will depend on the products they regularly buy and whether those products are among the approximately 800 items whose prices have been reduced.

For now, Lidl says the lower prices are intended to remain in place rather than simply forming part of a short-term promotional campaign.
